In Bengal there are multiple versions available. Guest guest
Om Subrahmanyaya Namah Namaste, It's also known as `Devi Mahatmyam'. In case you didn't get a commentary, I shall add a few words on how to read the text. But I don't know whether this is followed everywhere. Giitii Siikhrii Sirahkampii tathaa likhitapaadakah Anarthajnolpakandascha shadete paadakaadhamaah Those who recite this by any tune, who recite fast, those recite with head oscillating for a tune, those who read handwritten shlokas copied by self, those who recite without knowing the meaning, those who recite this in very small voice, these six kinds wont get desired results (as you know adhama = inferior) May even can have bad results. (Probably from Varaahii tantra) * * * Texts which have less than 1000 shlokas should be recited without looking in the text; Since Sapta sati is 700 shlokas, this is applicable. Even if this is not possible, book should not be kept on the floor or hand, instead on any small sitting base. It should not be recited in the mind, but aloud. (and slowly). Also please note that if u stop in between an Adhyaya, u have to start again that particular adhyaya. Rest can be learnt from a Guru. * * * I was initiated only the 11th Adhyaya which are narayani stutis. In our temple also, the priest recites the 11th adhyaya daily. The importance of 11th adhyaya can be seen from the shlokas, most are used as mantras, which if recited 100/1000 etc give quick results for the respective problem. (in a devi temple/ infront of a ghee lamp etc;) In the north I have seen, Devi suktam recited daily. (Yaa Devii sarvabuteshu…) The importance of the text is inexplicable, there are incidents where the mere possession of Devi Mahatmyam saved from dangerous situations. Guest guest
Dear Saaji, Ya devi sarvabhuteshu etc is the Aparajita Devi Stuti from the Durga Sapta Sati; one of the 3 stutis in that text, the other 3 being the Narayani, Brahmadikrita and Shakradikrita Devi Stuti. The Devi Suktam is from the Rg Veda and begins " aham rudrebhi... " etc. Durga sapta sati is also known as the Sri Sri Chandi in eastern India and during the annual Durga Puja its common practice for a priest to sit in a corner and recite the Chandi from a book. They call it Chandi Patha. I would recommend that you try the Ramakrishna Math transaltions and opt for your mother tongue or any other vernacular translation, if you are comfortable with it.
