Om Gurave Namah

Dear Jyotisha,

Please note that I will be giving a series of lectures on the Navamsa in the next few months at the Shiva Vishnu Temple, Greenbelt, MD. The first lecture will be given this Saturday, January 8th, at 4:00 pm. The lecture generally does not end at any specific time for we tend to enjoy each other's company and we transcend time when we get together. It generally goes on for a few hours unless I have some family obligations that evening.

The navamsa is either rarely used, misused or abused in Jyotish. It is the key to all good prediction and we are told by the Rishis that a prediction should never be made without consulting the navamsa. In fact, my personal experience is that most predictions go awry because our inability to use the navamsa correctly and the navamsa in most of the charts that we see in our practice are incorrect anyway. This then brings up another important topic related to the navamsa and that is rectification. This too will be dealt with in this series of lectures.

The Navamsa is the Dharmamsa and is therefore the most important varga chart. The purpose of life is to be aligned with one's dharma, to find spiritual meaning in the world, in experience of the world, and marriage or relationship happens to be one of the larger areas of life that shapes this experience.

Marriage and relationship promotes dharma and there is no spiritual "transcendence" without having mastered our capacity to relate to our fellow human beings. This is one of the reasons the dharmamsa, the navamsa, is used for marriage.

Sexuality also plays a very important role in our lives, in relationship and in marriage, and this is also to be seen in the navamsa. The capacity to be faithful to one spouse, to have "control" over one's sexual urge as well as one's sexual preference, is also to be seen in this important varga chart.

The Tantric approach to life tells us that we achieve true and everlasting fulfillment ONLY when we've experienced the entire fabric of our nature, the world, our prakriti. A human being is a totality and that totality has to be experienced in terms of our relationship to the soul - nature, cosmos, psyche or Shakti. Nothing can be rejected and avoidance or with drawl from experience only leads to a life that is partially lived and unfulfilled. The totality of life has to be experienced for true spiritual growth to occur. The entire world is a manifestation of soul, and Shakti is the power of the soul, the Divine Mother, the power of the Divine within us. She is the Mother of the world and her task is to nurture her children through the world.

The world after all is according to our nature, and experience of the world leads us to our real nature provided we approach it with conscious awareness of our experience. Shakti has to be awakened for any spiritual progress to take place and the awakening occurs through our capacity to reflect on our thoughts, feelings, beliefs, ideas, imaginations and delusions or in simple language, to see our own faults.

The patterns of our distorted fabric were already woven before we came into this world and our task is unweave, to experience those patterns and release ourselves from the distortions we have created, and to unfold the original pattern of the soul and its relationship to the Divine. The distortions arise in the mind as ignorance, fear, anger, rage, false imaginations, delusions, and misunderstanding and we are stubbornly identified with our distorted fabric and this manifests as a conditioned, ignorant and rigid mind. We imagine things and the soul speaks to us in images. Through our work with the imagination, we re-establish our relationship with the soul and awaken our Shakti. This process is carried out by the guiding power of the Ista Devata, our own faith as well as the power of mantra.

One of the most important uses of the navamsa is to guide the soul towards his/her Ista Devata, to bring about a spiritual awakening and this will be covered in these sessions.

However, the Navamsa relates to many other aspects of our lives as well but most importantly our spiritual path, its direction, and the timing of initiation as well as the personified aspect of God that we choose as our Ista Devata.

In addition, the navamsa is to be used to see the primary talents that we bring into this world as well as our capacity to manifest those talents. It is also to be used to examine our capacity for fame and success as well as the manifestation of that which is promised in the rasi chart.

You are advised to review the material in Jaimini Upadesa Sutra, by Jyotish Guru Sanjay Rath in preparation for these lectures.

All are welcome to attend!

Warm Regards,

Brendan
