The Puranas and Gauranga Mahaprabhu recommend sunrise to sunrise after the

Ekadasi tithi starts before Brahma-muhurta. So in some cases the fast

actually falls on Dvadasi, which is then called Mahadvadasi and produces an

even greater effect. When there are two Amavasyas in the same month, again

Mahadvadasi is recommended. You can calculate the exact dates for the whole

year for any location with this small program:

If you fasted completely, without even fruits or vegetables, it is a good

way to break the fast. At least one little grain is good to take for

breaking the fast. The above program also gives the proper times for

breaking the fast -- it begins with sunrise, but sometimes ends after a

short period.
