Dear Mr. Sarajit Poddar, I think your article may need some corrections, 1. The translation of Sloka. 69 needs correction. The lord of 8th portion is lord less. The portion of Saturn is represented by Gulika. BPHS SAYS : Gulika's longitude is calculated based on Istakal of the bigening of Saturn PORTION, where as Kalidas in Uttar-Kalamirta suggest ending point ( kindly appericiate , on this point the duration of lordless period starts and should not reperesent Gulika). Pt. Sanjay Rath agrees with this view and feels that we shold follow Parasara. Again , you have taken the Istakala for MANDI as suggested by Kalidas , which is based on Dinman or Ratriman of 32 Gatis. If Dinman is 32 Gatis then Ratriman should be 28 gatis and vica-varsa. As such there seems to be an inbuilt falicy In fact, Mandi is located in the middle of Saturn's portion. As a matter of fact, this may be the intent of Kalidas also.JH-hora

software is also calculating Mandi on this basis. In case you agree with above narration , you may ,as well , amend some of your tables. With best respectS and regards. G.K.GOEL G.K.GOELPh: 09350311433Add: L-409, SARITA VIHARNEW DELHI-110 076INDIA

Dear Goel sa’ab, Namaste,

Thank you for raising this point. I have thought over this issue

while I was writing the article. Here are my comments:

1.

About the position of Mandi, for the sake of computation of the

Mandi, Kalidas asked us to divide the day or night duration into 32 parts. This

however, does not mean he wants us to consider that the day or night duration

to be of 32 parts and other of 28 parts. Let me explain this.

When the day duration is

divided into 32 parts, you can consider this as divided into 8 parts, with 4 subpart

each. This can also be interpreted as, he wants us to divide the day into 8

yama and each yama into 4 parts each. If we do that, the end of 2nd

part or beginning of 3rd part would represent the middle of the yama

(or yamardha). When he says that that Mandi will rise at 26th, 22nd,

18th etc. part of 32 parts on Su, Mo, Tu etc., he means that, on the

said days, Mandi will rise in the middle of Saturn’s yama. Same way, we

need to divide the night duration into 32 parts and that is meant only for

computation of Mandi… So I do not see any fallacy.

Anyway, we are saying the

same thing for Mandi, it rises in the middle of Saturn’s portion.

2.

Gulika: If we divide the day duration into 8 parts or yamas,

then each part would be governed by the Sun to Saturn in a weekday order

starting from lord of the day from Sunrise. When we say 8th part is

lordless, it means that there is no weekday lord for that part. As per my

understanding, that part is governed by Gulika and the beginning of that part

is called the gulikodaya kala or the rising time of Gulika. So Gulika should

rise at the initiation of his yama or end of Saturn’s yama.

Anyway, there are many

controversy on this topic. However, I think that Pt. Rath agrees with gulika

rising at end of Saturn’s yama as per his book Jaimini Sutras.

This is what he says over

there:

* * * * * * * *

Gulika is an Upagraha and is

called the child of Saturn. The day duration is divided into 8 parts (called

Yama) and, beginning from the weekday lord, in the sequence of the days of the

week, each planet owns one part. The eight part is owned by Gulika. Thus,

Gulika is the ascendant for the time ending the part ruled by Saturn. For

example on a Wednesday (day birth), Saturn owns the 4th part. If the day

duration was exactly 12 hours and the Sunrise at exactly 6 a.m., Gulika would

rise at the end of the fourth part i.e. 12 ´ 4/8 = 6 hrs after Sunrise or 12:00 Noon..

* * * * * * * *

Bases on the above explanation, there should not be any changes

to the computation. In JHORA, there is an option of changing the rising time of

Gulika. I keep it to end of Saturn’s position.

Regards

Sarajit

Dear Mr. Sarajit Poddar,

I think your article may need some corrections,

1. The translation of Sloka. 69 needs correction. The lord of

8th portion is lord less. The portion of Saturn is represented by Gulika. BPHS

SAYS :

Gulika's longitude is calculated based on Istakal of the

bigening of Saturn PORTION, where as Kalidas in Uttar-Kalamirta suggest ending

point ( kindly appericiate , on this point the duration of lordless period

starts and should

not reperesent Gulika). Pt. Sanjay Rath agrees with this

view and feels that we shold follow Parasara.

Again , you have taken the Istakala for MANDI as

suggested by Kalidas , which is based on Dinman or Ratriman of 32 Gatis. If

Dinman is 32 Gatis then Ratriman should be 28 gatis and vica-varsa. As such

there seems to be an inbuilt falicy In fact, Mandi is located in the middle of

Saturn's portion. As a matter of fact, this may be the intent of Kalidas

also.JH-hora software is also calculating Mandi on this basis.

In case you agree with above narration , you may ,as well ,

amend some of your tables.
