RAvana is not a single person. the name refers to a tribe, a remnant of Assuric Brahmins. The proper RAvana was lviign during the times of BhArgava Rama , much before the times of Ramayan. RAma fought with his descendants, which is the story described in Ramayana. The mythological history (a curious word) shows that the Assuric brahmins were praying to the same Vedic Gods that Rg vEda has described, except of course aindra and Vsnu. The Lanka of Ramayana times was said to be practicing Vedic rites. However, it is also portrayed that RAvanas were fighting and praying to Lord Siva at the same time. Towards this end, RAvanas were always fighting tribes outside the Varna system as well as with some ksatriyas such as Heheyas. These tribes included VAnarAs, Yaksas etc. Siva might be one such tribe, with who these people could have been fighting on one hand and at the same time, the word Siva also reflects the Lord Siva who could have been the ishta devata of RAvana tribe. RAvana faced many a set back- in the hands of Vanaras and Heheyas. The story of Dasakanta making a loud cry(and hence, called RAvana) when Lord Siva stamped him under the Himalayas might be an allegory of setback he received in the hands of the tribe called Siva. Hope this gives some food for thinking, kishore patnaik On Jan 12, 2008 12:01 PM, yeeahoo_99 <nitish.arya wrote:

Dear list,

This is a curious question. The subject line is clear. Does anybody

have a reasonably good answer to it? Has anybody thought about it?

regards,

nitish
