India's First Mission to Moon

The following is the potential launch data of Chandrayaan-1 if the

weather is good enough.

 

October 22, 2008

Time: 6:20:00

Time Zone: 5:30:00 (East of GMT)

Place: 80 E 14', 13 N 36' (Sriharikota, about 80km North of

Chennai, India)

 

I am just a beginner in Jyotish and not capable of making good

predictions. I am providing the following observations which hopefully

will encourage learned members to shed some light on auspicious date

selection techniques (muhurtha).

Favorable Factors :

 

1. Mercury is weekday lord, hora lord, karana lord and kala lord.

Mercury is 9th lord (blessings) and 12th lord signifying foreign

travel. Mercury is well placed being exalted in Virgo in Rasi and own

sign Gemini in Navamsa.

 

Mercury is the natural significator for communication which is of

great importance in space exploration. Communication problems could

end the mission prematurely, especially so for unmanned missions.

 

2. Moon is well placed in Pushya. " Pushya is a constellation par

excellence that can be universally employed for all purposes,

excepting of course marriage. " - Muhurtha by Dr B.V. Raman. Moon is

10th lord located in own sign 10th house (mission, duty).

 

3. 10th lord Moon has a high score of 7 points in its bhinna

ashtakavarga and samudaya ashtakavarga of 10th house has a high score

of 35 points.

 

Moon signifies sustainence. The longer the intended space mission

duration, the more important Moon becomes. Chandrayaan-1 mission

duration is 2 years.

 

4. Sun, Mars, Venus and Saturn are maha yogadas (regardless of which

Sunrise definition you use in Jhora 7.2).

 

Unfavorable Factors :

 

1. Four malefics in kendra to Libra lagna - Rahu, Mars, Sun, Ketu.

 

2. Rasi lagna lord Venus is debilitated in Virgo in Navamsa. Venus is

also the lord of Sun-Moon yoga Sadhya.

 

3. Sun (vitality) is debilitated in rasi and is the badhakesa

(obstruction lord) for Libra lagna. It is located in rasi lagna

conjuncts natural malefic Mars and aspected by natural malefic Saturn.

Sun is also the tithi lord of Krishna Navami.

 

4. 3rd lord (communication, courage) Jupiter is in Marana Karaka

Sthana (3rd house) with Mandi and Gulika.

 

5. In Navamsa, 9th lord (blessings, travel) Sun is in Marana Karaka

Sthana, conjunct natural malefic and inimical Saturn and aspected via

rasi drishti by Rahu and Ketu. 12th house (foreign travel) is heavily

afflicted.
