Guest guest
Impurities are elements are color causing agents that are not present in the pure compound. Impurities are elements that occur in low concentration in the gemstone. A ruby ( Padmaraaga) may contain < 1% Cr and it will look pink or red, but the same material without Cr will be completely colorless. Chromium (Cr+++) in ruby gives red color. Cr also imparts red color in spinel. Same Chromium (Cr+++) in beryl gives Emerald ( markat) grassy green color. Aquamarine is also beryl but unlike emerald it lacks Cr+++. The color of aquamarine is due to trace amounts of iron impurities in the beryl structure. The color ranges from pale green to pale blue to blue depending on the relative concentrations of Fe2+ to Fe3+. Titanium oxide (Ti4+ and Fe2+ impurities ) produces vivid blue Sapphire ( Indraneela ) . Iron in the Fe3+ state causes the color in yellow sapphires ( Pushparaaga) . Even though many people have WRONG understanding, ACtually , White Sapphires come in Pushparaaga category (Pisces sign of Jupiter). Colorless Diamond ( vajra) is almost devoid of impurities and truly a Venus gemstone. Deepak Y
