|| Om Gurave Namah ||Dear Jyotishas, It's well known that Pt. Sanjay Rath takes Mandi and Gulika as two seperate grahas. Regarding the exact calculation method he has not yet mentioned anything in particular.

Classics  say that Mandi rises at 26,22,18,14,10,6,2 for a 30 ghatika day portion and At 10,6,2,26,22,18,14 Ghatika's for a 30 Ghatika night portion. For different dina/ratri maana take the proportion.

Now, Actually this formula indicates that a 1/8th portion should be further divided in 15 further portions 4 Vighatika's or 6 Minutes each (1.5hrs/15 = 6minutes).Using the above formula we see that it always falls in " Saturn " 1/8th portion of day/night.

Further that " Saturn " 1/8 portion is divided in 15 more parts. In that part also mandi varies as per day in that 15th portion of Saturn Mandi falls on 14,13,12,11,9,8 respectively from sunday onwards.

Let me show this in a table,

For example, if you divide the Day in 8 parts, The saturn portion would fall on 7th portion on Sunday..In that 7th portion the 14th part will belong to Mandi.Let me show this a tabular form for Sunday,

6 Minutes is portion is 1/15 of a Kaala (1/8 portion of a day).6 minutes is also a tattva duration when a day is divided in 120 parts. Now, Some have argued that this formula could be wrong as it may assume a 32 Ghatika day/night portion divided by 8. This argument cannot be accepted as one of the basic lessons in astrology teach that Dina/ratri maana should be taken as 30 Ghatika average and it varies with seasons and long/lat.

I request learned members to give their comments.Warm Regards.

No, I think Mr Gopal Goel's point is quite logical and acceptable. The idea of

giving ghatika numbers based on a 32 ghatika day/night is not that an average

day/night has 32 ghatikas, but that it results in integer numbers. Instead of

using an average day of 30 ghatikas and having to mention non-integer numbers

like 24.375, 20.625, 16.875 etc in a poem, it is very very convenient for a poet

to use a day/night of 32 ghatikas and give simple integer numbers like 26, 22,

18 etc.

Thus, the act of using 32 ghatika days for explaining the calculation is for the

poetic convenience of having to express integer numbers, rather than anything

else. This is perfectly logical and acceptable.

Actually, he has. I am not sure if he said anything publicly or not, but he did

tell me clearly several years ago to take Gulika at the beginning of Saturn's

portion and Maandi at the middle of Saturn's portion. Those defaults of JHora

were decided based on his teaching.

Best regards,

Narasimha

Namaste,

Two points:

(1) There is no " compromise " of " accuracy " here. Whether one takes 26, 22, 18

ghatikas in a 32 ghatika day or 24.375, 20.625, 16.875 ghatikas in a 30 ghatika

day, the results will be the same after you do the math for your specific day

length.

(2) The " rishi " who covered the topic of upagraha calculation (i.e. Parasara)

did not even mention any specific numbers. He chose to give the *formula*

instead of teaching with specific numbers.

Best regards,

Narasimha
