Dear Friends,Sarvarthchintamani of Vankatesha Sarma (father of the author of Jatakprijat) clearlystates that Gulika and Mandi are two sons of Saturn.Uttarkalamirta of Kalidasasays that ending point of Saturn's portion should be called as gulika. This book alsogives the ghaties on every day to find out MANDI. If these ghaties are calculated at the scale of dinmaan or Ratrimaan of 32 ghaties , Mandi will worked out exactly at middle point of Saturn,s portion.Pt. Gopesh Ojha , a famous commentator of Jatakprijat and Phaldeepika is also of thisview. No doubt earlier , there may be some stand taken by famous authors , but present situation emerges as under:1. Saturn's portion is called as Gulika Vela (an arc like sign) which is equivalent to one eighth portion of

dinmaan or ratriman as the case may be. It is to be worked out for each place and everyday separately. 2. Gulika and Mandi points will always fall in Gulika(ie Saturn's)portion 3. BPHS says that Gulika point is initial point of Gulika Vela whereas Kalidas says it is ending point 4. Mandi is the Middle point of Gulika portion.Regards, G.K.GOELPh: 09350311433Add: L-409, SARITA VIHARNEW DELHI-110 076INDIA

Dear Sri Goel ji,

Nameste,

After this post and particularly when Sri Sanjay P has posted the link where

page 29 and 30 contains opinion about Gulika and mandi calculation as taught by

Sri M.R.Bhatt ; I wish to point out crux of dispute and factors behind the

controversy.

Gulika and Mandi are separate is a view held by ancients and there should be no

doubt about it.

..

I am reproducing a letter published in columns of Astrological magazine that was

written by Prof M.R.Bhatt from vittal on subject of Gulika nad Mandi in Jan 81.

This is important For He was assistant TO Sri V.S.Shastri when Translations OF

many scriptures were in progress.

The faulty writing gave rise to opinion held by many that mandi is middle

portion of Saturn part.

Please see his letter.

Mandi and Gulika.

Sir,- The Learned Mihira is of the opinion ( Ref p 798 A.M.) that the notion of

difference between Mandi and gulika was given rise to by the uncritical

translations of verse 8 kanda 1 of Uttarkalamrita by the late Mr V.Subrahmanya

Sastri. As I was closely associated with the late V.S.Sastri in the translation

of many astrological works including a revision of the above work in 1951, it

would not be improper on my part to state why the translator had to name the two

minor planets separately. It is true that many an author like Mantreswara take

the two entities as synonymous. Notwithstanding the opinions of the authors of

Jatak Parijata, Phaldeepika etc The author of Uttarkalamrita Has categorically

said that the two sons of Saturn are of dreadful effect to the house tenanted

by them. His declaration to the above effect is based on the authority Of Sage

Mandavya. This proves that in the days of that Sage these two minor planets were

considered as two distinct entities. This is confirmed by the difference in the

rising periods of the two .In the notes appended to the verse the translator has

shown that on Saturday( day time) Mandi rises at two ghati after sunrise and

Gulika at 3 ¾ ghatis after sunrise, When duration is 30 ghatis.Introducing

verses 7 and 8 the commentator states in unequivocal terms ; In the preceding

verse determination of Ascendant has been explained on the basis of Mandi, hence

now the author gives the methods of calculating the positions of mandi and

gulika. " It is quite possible that in days of yore these two sons of Saturn

were considered as quite distinct However , later on authors might have taken

mandi alone for practical purposes, and ignored Gulika, but used the two names

synonymous. It may also be noted that there is no valid reason to conclude that

the Author of Uttarkalamrita " was merely trying to be fanciful by earmarking

one of the two names to the day births and other to night births "

In spite of imperfections Uttarkalamrita Is a valuable compendium of Ancient

wisdom.

Vittal Prof M.R.Bhatt.

Concluion Prof M R Bhatt has demonstrated calculation of a model chart for male

native born on 8 th September , 1957 at 9.55 AM IST at Bombay. He has calculated

Gulika at 9sign 0 degree 8 minutes 31 seconds. For the same Native He has

calculated Mandi at 9 Sin 23 degree 23 minutesand 52 seconds.

If J hora is employed and Sun rise definition is selected ( The tip of sun's

disk appears to be on the eastern horizon.) and Gulika rises at beginning of

Saturn's Portion and Mandi rises at the end of Saturn's portion Software Gives

Gulika 0 CP 09 53.96 and Mandi is given at 25 Cp 12 23.47.

With regards.

RCS

OM SHRI RAGHAVENDRA GURUBHYO NAMAH

Dear Goel Ji,

Thanks for the information provided. Now as per my knowledge is concerned, what BPHS has written has to be correct. It says that Gulika is in the beginning portion of Saturn's position. Now suppose if we take the ending part of Saturn, then comes the part of Sun.

Anyhow LateMr.M.R.Bhat has given the explanations for both Mandi and Gulika wih example. He was an excellent Sanskrit Scholar also.

I hope this helps.

With Shri Hari Vayu Guru Naama Smaran,

Ramadas Rao.
