Guest guest
Here is a Srimad Bhagavam translation I did that differs scientifically from Srila Prabhupada BhaktiVedanta Swami's translation, promoted by Iskcon. The difference is that Srimad Bhagavat describes the word " paramanu " as what modern science has discovered to be the sub-atomic particle. A paramanu cannot contain a jiva. The Bhagavat further says that a combination of two Paramanus = an ANU or atom - and an atom is the smallest material body that a jiva can inhabit. This is what Bhagavat says, and is also exactly the same as modern science. But this is quite different in Srila Prabhupada's translation. First here is my translation of 5 verses... The Vedic Divisions of Time SOURCE: Srimad Bhagavat, Canto III, Chapter XI Translation by Richard S. Brown Verse 1: (The great sage) Maitreya said: " The smallest particle of material substance, which has not yet combined with any other similar particles, is called PARAMANU (a sub-atomic particle of matter).  Paramanus always exist both in the dormant and manifest states of material existence. It is the combination of more than one paramanu (sub-atomic particle) which gives rise to the illusory concept of a (material) unit. Verse 2: And the entire manifest material existence, taken as a non-specific whole, and before returning to an unmanifest (dormant) state, is defined as the largest (material) size. Verse 3: We can understand the short and long dimensions of (material) time, as a potency of the Supreme all-pervading transcendental Lord, Who, in the form of the Sun, passes across the small and large dimensions of (material) things. Verse 4: The amount of time it takes the Sun to pass across the smallest particle of matter is called paramanu which is the smallest measure of time, while the period it takes to cross the total expanse of material creation is called the longest measure of time. Verse 5: A combination of two paramanus constitutes an ANU (atom); and three anus (atoms) makes one trasarenu. Trasarenus are visable [to the naked eye] when seen floating upward in the air while viewed through rays of sunlight which enter a room through a latticed window. ---HERE ABOVE IS WHERE I DIFFER AND I'M BACKED UP BY SCIENCE, LOGIC, GRAMMER, AND OTHER ENGLISH TRANSLATIONS. Paramanu = Sub atomic particle (cannot contain life) Anu = Atom (can contain life) I'm not trying to find fault. I'm just trying to get it straight. Read what HDG is said to have written of the above 5 slokas. If HDG was here today I could get it corrected in the BBT version. Now it sounds wrong, and HDG would agree with me, I'm sure! Here is What Swami Prabhupada is said to have written (Iskcon Srimad Bhagavatam, same 5 slokas) Bhaktivedanta VedaBase: ÅšrÄ«mad BhÄgavatam SB 3.11.1: The material manifestation's ultimate particle, which is indivisible and not formed into a body, is called the atom*. It exists always as an invisible identity, even after the dissolution of all forms. The material body is but a combination of such atoms, but it is misunderstood by the common man. SB 3.11.2: Atoms are the ultimate state of the manifest universe. When they stay in their own forms without forming different bodies, they are called the unlimited oneness. There are certainly different bodies in physical forms, but the atoms themselves form the complete manifestation. SB 3.11.3: One can estimate time by measuring the movement of the atomic combination of bodies. Time is the potency of the almighty Personality of Godhead, Hari, who controls all physical movement although He is not visible in the physical world. SB 3.11.4: Atomic time is measured according to its covering a particular atomic space. That time which covers the unmanifest aggregate of atoms is called the great time. SB 3.11.5: The division of gross time is calculated as follows: two atoms make one double atom, and three double atoms make one hexatom. This hexatom is visible in the sunshine which enters through the holes of a window screen. One can clearly see that the hexatom goes up towards the sky. *ACBSP: " The material manifestation's ultimate particle, which is indivisible and not formed into a body, is called the atom " --- This is wrong because the ANU (atom) CAN be split and is NOT indivisible. What fits that discription is only the very word used " PARAMANU " which is sub-atomic particle. New Email names for you!
