Dear Bhagavathi ji,

In Sloka , 31 the word Vilagna is translated signifying as Lagna.

In SLOKA 34 AND 35, THREE WORDS ARE APPEARING SIMULTANEOUSLY,

'LAGNAHORAVILAGNABHAYAM'.This leads us no where.

In other versions of BPHS , these words are not occurring simultaneously.

Further more Vilagna may not signify Ghatilagna.There looks some mistake some

where.

As such , sloka 34 and 35 may be indicating pair of Lagna and Horalagna.

The three pair method has several exception , some are given in next chapter

on 'Marka'

I will recall my memory and try to list exceptions to the best of my

understanding.

23 evam sansadhya cha anyesham hanyat swaswa parayusha

Nrunam parayusha bhaktva tesham ayuhu sphutam bhavet

 

(Note: I will figure out the exact translation of this verse. The one given by

Santhanam does not seem to match. Maybe, other members can help )

 

24 atha ayuhu paramam vakshye nanajatisamudbhavam

Anantasankhyam devanam rishinam cha dwijottama

 

Now I shall tell about the complete life span of other living beings. Gods and

sages enjoy endless life span (immortal), O Brahmin

 

25 grudhra olook shuka dhwanksha sarpanam cha sahastrakam

Shyena vanara bhalluka mandukanam shatatrayam

 

The life span for Eagles, owls, parrots, crows and snakes is 1000 years. Falcon,

monkey, bear and frog, 300 years

 

26 panchashaduttarasha tam rakshasanam prakirtitam

Naranam kunjaranam cha vinshottarashatam tatha

 

Demons live for 150 years. Human beings and elephants live for 120 years

 

27 dwatrinshad ghotakanancha panchavinshat kharoshtrayoho

Vrishanam mahishanam cha chaturvishativatsar am

 

32 years for horses, 25 for donkeys and camels, 24 for oxen and buffaloes,

 

28 vinahsti ayuhu mayuranam chagadinam cha shodasha

Hansanam panchanava cha pikanam dwadasha abdakaha

 

20 years for peacocks, 16 for goats and others (rams etc) , 14 for swans, 12

years for cuckoos

 

29 shunam paaravatanam cha kukkutanam dwadasha abdakaha

Budbuda adi andajanam cha parayuhu saptavatsaraha

 

Dogs, pigeons and hens have a life span of 12 years. It is to be understood that

all other birds have a longevity of 7 years

 

30 yadet adhuna proktam tridha ayu dwijasattama

Teshu kincha kada grahyamiti te kathayami aham

 

O Brahmin, I have narrated three methods of longevity. I shall tell about which

of the three systems should be chosen

 

31 vilagnape balopete shubhadrishte anshasambhavam

Ravau pindodbhavam grahyam chandre naisargikam tatha

 

If the natal lagna is strong and aspected by benefics, then the amsahyu method

is used. Is the Sun lagna is strong, then pindayu method is used; moon lagna be

strong then naisargika method is used

 

32 balasamye dwayoho yogadalam ayuhu prakirtitam

Trayanam triyutehe trayanshasamam gyeyam dwijottama

 

If two lagnas happen to be equal strong, then two systems should be worked out,

and the average should be considered. If all three lagnas are equally strong,

then the average of three should be taken

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

33 atha anyadapi vakshayami srunu tvam dwijasattama

Kaishchit lagna ashtameshabhyam manda indubhyam tathaiva cha

 

Now I shall tell about other methods, listen O Brahmin. This is based on Lagna,

8th lord, Saturn and moon

 

34 lagnahoravilagnabhy am sphutam ayuhu prakirtitam

Adau lagna ashtameshabhyam yogam ekam vichintayet

 

The longevity can be arrived it from the positions of hora lagna and(?)vighati

lagna. Now the lagna and the 8th lord, together is one combination (for

longevity purpose)

 

35 dwitiyam mandachandrabhyam yogam pashyet dwijottama

Lagnahoravilagnabhy am tritiyam parichintayet

 

The second is seen from the combination of moon and Saturn, O excellent of

Brahmins, the third is the combination of hora lagna and vighati lagna (?)

 

(Note: Verse 34 says lagna ashtameshabhyam, so it means just lagna and the 8L

and not lagna lord. Verses 34 and 35 mention vilagna, which could best translate

to vighati lagna than lagna, because in pair one, we already had lagna with 8L.

This could be one of the reason why the three pair rule does not work all the

time, as we have not been considering vighati lagna over lagna in pair three.

This is my humble opinion, from the observation of several cases. Other learned

members can share their views)

 

36 chararashau sthitau dwau chet tada deergham udahrutam

Ekah sthire aparo dwandwe deergham ayuhu tathapi hi

 

If two (out of three) combinations happen to be a movable sign, the life span

will be long. One pair in a fixed sign and the other in a dual sign, also

confers a long life

 

37 ekah chare sthira anyah chet tada madhyam udahrutam

Dwau va dwandwe sthitau vipra madhyam ayuhu tathapi cha

 

One in movable, the other in fixed confers medium life span. The same is also

the case when two are in dual signs

 

38 ekah chare aparo dwandwe dwau va sthiragatau tada

Jatakasya tada alpayuhu gyeyam evam dwijottama

 

One in movable, and the other two in dual or fixed signs, will give limited

longevity, O Brahmin

 

39 yogatrayena yogabhyam siddham yad grahyameva tat

Yogatrayavisanvade lagnahoravilagnatah

 

The type of life denoted by three pairs should be considered. If all three

happen to be different, then the longevity denoted by hora lagna and (?)vighati

lagna should be considered

 

40 lagne va saptame chandre grahyam manda indutah tada

Haso vriddhihi cha kakshyaya vichintya sarvada budhihi

 

If moon happens to be in the lagna or in the 7th house, then the pair of

Saturn-moon rule applies ( if all three are different )

41 deerghe yogatrayena evam nakha Chandra samabdakaha

Yoga dwayena vasvahsa yogaekena rasankakaha

 

If by all three pairs, long life is indicated, the span is 120 years, if it is

by two pairs, then it is 108 years, if one pair indicates long life, then the

span is 91 years

 

42 madhye yogatrayena evam kha ashtatulya abdakaha smritaha

Dwayaga yogadwayena atra yogaekena abdhi shanmitaha

 

If medium life is denoted by three pairs, the span is 80 years, 72 years if by

two pairs and 64 years if denoted by one pair

 

43 alpe yogatrayena atra dwa trinshanmita vatsaraha

Yogadwayena shat trinshat yoga ekena cha kha abdhayah

 

If limited longevity is indicated by three pairs, the span is 32 years, if by

two pairs, then it is 36 years and if by one pair, it is 40 years
