STRENGTH OF PLANETS

Qn:  Sir, I read often in many contexts, that one has to find ‘strongest’

of the Planets in a chart for various interpretations.  Is there any method to

find this, or should I go to ‘Astakavarga’ charts for each planet and grade

the strength of the Planet?

Ans:  Very pertinent and important question.  When you see a doctor, (even for

a tooth ache!), the first act of his is to check the ‘pulse, color of tong,

color of eye lids, perhaps blood pressure, heart beat etc’. Similarly, in a

given short time for an Astrologer, he should have the ability to immediately

find in a given chart the strength of the Planets in that chart, instead of

going into other methods of ascertaining these, as into calculations for

‘shadbalas’ – six fold strength.’

Every Planet has ‘up or down qualities’ and every point of ‘strength’

has been set off against a point of ‘weakness’. These two ‘terms’

fluctuate according to varied ‘qualities’ acquired by Planet. The more the

‘plus’ points left in count with a Planet, that Planet will be termed

‘Stronger’ among other Planets in the chart.

Let me give a ‘check list’ for easy reach to find the ‘strongest’ planet

in a chart:

(a).   The Planet or Planets positioned ‘exalted’ in a birth chart;

(b).   The Planet placed in its own sign in the birth chart or Navamsa;

©.   It is placed in its friend’s place in the birth chart or Navamsa;

(d).   It is placed in a triangular house to Lagna

(e).   It is placed to an angular house to Lagna;

(f).    It is placed in the Moolathrikona sign in the birth chart;

(g).   It is a beneficial Planet for that particular Lagna in the birth chart;

(h).   It is associated with or aspected by a Planet that is a beneficial

Planet for that Lagna;

(i).    The Planet is Vargottama;

(j).    The Planet is in retrograde;

(k)    The Planet has a ‘directional’ strength in the ‘Birth Chart’:

The Sun and the Moon in the 10th House from Lagna;

The Moon and the Venus in the fourth house from Lagna;

Jupiter and Mercury in the First House (Lagna)

            Saturn positioned in the seventh house from Lagna.

(l)          A waxing Moon is more powerful than a waning Moon:

              The Moon gets stronger as it moves away from the

Sun.  It is very important that the Moon is ‘powerful’ in a birth chart, as

this will indicate how intelligent or relatively sharp in thinking of the

Natal.  Those born on ‘new Moon’ will have Sun and Moon in the same house,

while those born in ‘full Moon’ will find that Sun and the Moon are

diagonally opposite houses in a chart. So, the Moon is considered to be weak

when born on Amavasya, and relatively strong for those born on Pournami.

(m).     The Sun is more powerful when positioned in the signs from

Capricorn (Makara) to Gemini (Mithuna) – said to be in move in

‘Uttarayana’.

(n).      A Planet hemmed between ‘beneficial’ Plants for the chart;

(o).      A Planet which is in aspect of beneficial Planets for the chart,

on the adjoining house on either side of the house in which the Planet is

positioned;

(p).     The Planet is positioned between 12ºand 18º in a sign.

Let us now see when a Planet is said to be weak in a chart:

(a)    A Planet is debilitated in a birth chart or in Navamsa;

(b)    A Planet is in its natural enemy’s sign in the birth chart or

Navamsa;

©Â Â Â Â  The Planet is in 6th, 8th, or 12th House from Lagna;

(d)    It is associated with or aspected by a Planet that is a malefic Planet

for that Lagna;

(e)     The Planet is a malefic Planet to that Lagna;

(f)      The Planet is combust;

(g)    When the Planet is hemmed with malefic Planets in a house

(h)    When the Planet has aspect of a malefic Planet;

(i)      The Planet is in the last degree of a movable or a fixed sign.

When this is applied in a common sign the Planet must be Vargothama and thereby

becomes ‘strong’;

(j)      The Planet is not having directional strength.

An Astrologer must note for, it is bad to have Venus in 12th House, Mercury in

the 8th house, or Jupiter in the 6th House from Janma Lagna. However, it is also

found that Venus in 12th House should not be in the sign or Navamsa of Saturn.
