Dear Rao ji,

The similar line is toed by Phaldeepika and

uttarkalamirta..

There is absolutely no controversy on the first

table drawn by you.

In second table the learned Acharya indicated the values

assuming the dinman or Ratriman as 30(thirty) ghatika.

These value will give the middle point if we replace

30 ghatika with 32 ghatika.Then, every thing seems logical.

The ghatikas given in your second table will then give the sputa's of the middle

points of the portions of respective planets.This was

discussed in THE jAGANNATH hORA FOURUM,and JH-Hora

program follows it.

As portion of Saturn as a whole is called Gulika Kala and is

considered as most fear some , the latter authorities reach

to the consensus that the sphut of initial point may be considered

as Gulika point. And Middle point of Gulika portion may be called

as 'MANDI' point where maximum poison of this portion is concentrated.

The question arises , the effect of placement of Gulika point are given in many

Jatak Grantha like , BPHS, pRASANMARG , PHALDEEPIKA and so on. If we take Gulika

, the initial point of gulika portion,the effects will be mild and if we take

Mandi point , the effects will be very harsh and much more evil compared to the

placement of Gulika (initial) point.

In all fareness Gulkesa should be the planet which is the dispositor

of Mandi ,repeat, Mandi point.

As portions of all planets follow consecutively in the zodiac,

the bad effect of Gulika portion will ONLY be felt when a planet is located in

gulika portion like zodical signs.The rule of conjuction will not apply.

Kala/Vela and Mandi.Please go through this article and check whether the

calculations given here will match with JH software.

GULIKA KALA and MANDI

Here is a Shloka regarding Gulika Kala which should be avoided during auspicious

celeberations- Muhurta :

To find out the Gulika Kala from Sunday to Saturday, we have to divide the day

into 8 parts.For 1st part,the day Lord becomes the Lord.Then for other

parts,consecutively other day Lords becomes Lords.So 8th part will not have any

Lord.So this is a part of the day without any planetary Lord.

Meaning either in day time or night time,the 8th portion of Saturn is called

Gulika Kala,Sunâ€™s portion as Kala,Kuja/Marsâ€™ portion as Mrityu,Budha/

Mercuryâ€™s portion as Ardha Prahara,Guru/ Jupiterâ€™s portion is called as Yama

Kantaka.these have to be calculated as per each placeâ€™s day and night time

durations.

auspicious celebration done during Gulika Kala/Vela becomes a waste and will

remove all the good results of such auspicious function.

Gulikaâ€™s rise starting from Sunday,from Sun rise,day rising Ghatika and from

Dear All,

there are two calculation options regarding Kaala Velas:

(1) Taking the starting point of the daily portion of the Graha, and

(2) Taing the middle point of this portion.

In Jagannatha Hora, the setting is " middle portion " - but you can change

it to " beginning " .

(Preferences -> Upagraha Calculation Options -> Kala, Mrityu rise at the

.... (beginning))

Taking the middle point is one view, if we see the 8 daily periods of

the Grahas (not equal to the 12 planetary Horas!) as " fields " . As we

know, the middle of a field is strongest, e.g. 15Â° in each Rashi is

the strongest placement within this Rashi. This way one could interpret

the 8 daily periods as fields, too, and compute the Kaala Velas to the

middle of this period.

For Saturn's daily period this would give " Gulika " for the starting

point and " Mandi " for the middle point.

Obviously in vedic astrology tradition some astrologers defined both as

the same, others not.

Sure is, who uses Mandi - the middle portion of Saturn - has to do so

with all other planetary portions, too.

Why taking only Saturn's middle portion, Mandi - and not all other six

ones?

There are *seven* Kaala Velas ( " co-Grahas " ) in summary.

Nevertheless, BPHS teaches to take the starting point of the daily

planetary 1/8 portion (the last portion is lordless, always). This makes

sense, too:

If we look at Dasha sequences, we see that in most Dashas the starting

point of it is the " strongest one " ,

e.g. if a Jupiter MD starts, the first AD is of Jupiter, too (and PD,

SD). Or Taurus MD, start, first AD of Taurus.

With this perspective the beginning of a period is stronger (full

Jupiter, or Taurus influence, later other Graha and Rashi periods).

As Kaala Velas are derived from *periods* it makes more sense in my view

to take the starting point for Kaala Vela computation - and BPHS teaches

exactly this.
