Rahu and Kethu – a study:

Some ask me on what are the qualities of these Nodes- Rahu and Kethu in Hindu

Astrology.  I wish to give the details:

 

Rahu is considered as head of serpent, while Kethu is said to be the tail of

that serpent. When all the planets are said to transit in one direction (say,

clock wise in South Indian tradition) of chart designing, these Nodes transit in

the opposite direction.

 

No house, among 12 houses in a birth chart belongs to either of these Nodes. 

They are classified as malefic in the list of planets.  It is said ‘Sanivath

Rahu’ and Kujavath Kethu’.  Though Rahu is equated to the qualities of

Saturn – a natural malefic, this Node is considered more malefic than Saturn

in result analysis, causing more miseries and hardships, under certain

conditions and qualifications, in a person’s life.  Similarly, Kethu is more

harmful to cause events as malefic more than Mars, a natural malefic. 

 

Unlike the Planets, Rahu and Kethu (Sanskrit for Dragon’s head and dragon’s

tail) are not physical bodies with shape or mass, but are two intersecting

points formed where the orbit of the Sun cuts the orbit of Moon.  They are

always 180º apart, or in opposition to one another. They are always classified

as malefic.

 

Kumba (Aquarius) is the Moolathrikona of Rahu, and Mithuna (Gemini) is its

exalted sign, and Kanya (Virgo) is its ‘Swakshetra’) Adh.1 Sl 28 :

Jathakaparijatha. “Saraavalee’, ‘Sumbhuhoraprakasa and Parasara also agree

on the above. Ref: BPHS: Ch 47, verses 34 to 36.

Kethu owns Vruchika (Scorpio) and is exalted there, while Dhanush (Sagittarius)

is it’s ‘Moolathrikona’.  – Same as above - references.

 

Rahu is (Karaka) for gambling, social or political movements, outcastes,

reptiles, snakes, snake-bite, widow, and swelling of body.

Kethu is karaka for witchcraft, trouble to enemies and ‘moksha’.

 

I will give below what these Nodes indicate:

 

Rahu indicates:-

Maternal grand mother, Paternal grand father, false arguments, restlessness,

wicked thoughts, widow, empires, states, philosophy, divine thinking, snake

bite, foreigners, low non-religious unhygienic unsociable people, bonding,

smoke, pilgrimage, black magic, fame and name (good or bad), swelling in any

part of body, life in general, speculation, gambling, intoxicating, , black

coloring, knowledge of politics, denigrate one to life’s higher penalties,

loss of status involving with low listed opposite sex in infatuation or

commitments, secretly involving with other person’s spouse or paramour, erotic

sex pleasure, referring community other than Hindus, Muslims, Parsi, Persian,

and so on.

Rahu represents disease, cancer, skin disease, insanity, unhappiness, in

diagnosable disease, loneliness, psychic disturbances, procession of one by

discarnate supernatural beings, epidemics, alcoholism, tendency to look downward

or away while talking, hiccups, diplomacy, heart trouble, leprosy, mental unrest

and confusion, and injury in feet.

Kethu indicates wounds, injuries, conflicts. Back-biting, death, liberation,

fire, tuberculosis, cholera, fever, pain, paternal grand mother, maternal grand

father, spiritual initiation, seer, enmity, anger, doubt, narrow mindedness,

ambition, isolation, lack of self-confidence occult, charms, and amulets

Rahu is friendly with Mercury, Venus and Saturn; is Neutral with Jupiter; is

Inimical with Sun, Moon and Mars.

Kethu is friendly with Mars, Venus and Saturn; is Neutral with Mercury and

Jupiter; is Inimical with Sun and Moon.

Rules of ‘Kala Sarpa Yoga’ ( please note that it is not ‘Dosham’) is

formed:

         (i) if Rahu is in the first six houses from the Lagna; Degrees

of Lagna - and Rahu, to be noted to find that Rahu is positioned - in

Lagna (while with positions of Planets- in other houses -away from Lagna within

first six houses excluding the cusp of Lagna - check Bhava chart)

       (ii) all the planets are between Rahu and Kethu including

ascendant,

      (iii) no planet is located in the same sign as Rahu.

This ‘yoga’ destroys the good indications in a horoscope.  The house where

Rahu is located suffers most. The ‘yoga’ will still operate if conditions

(ii) and (iii) only are fulfilled but its strength will be less. 

 

The effect of this yoga will be felt in Rahu Desha or Rahu Bukti in inimical

planet’s Desha and comparatively mild in periods of friendly or neutral

Planet’s Desha.  However the effect will be far less if Rahu is in

‘Moolathrikona’ in birth chart.
