A 7.7 Magnitude quake struck near Aceh today.

 

-Magnitude 7.7 quake shakes Indonesia's Sumatra

 

SINABANG, Indonesia (Reuters) – A major earthquake of 7.7 magnitude struck off

the coast of Aceh on the Indonesian island of Sumatra on Wednesday, but there

were no immediate reports of casualties.

 

A Reuters photographer in Sinabang on Simeulue island, south of Aceh, said there

was panic and electricity was cut off after the quake. Metro TV reported that

people rushed to higher ground in some areas.

 

Aceh Governor Irwandi Yusuf said there had not been reports of damage or

casualties so far.

 

" I am on the coast now, some people had gone to take refuge on higher ground but

now they have returned to their homes, " Yusuf told Metro TV.

 

The quake, which struck around 5:15 a.m. (2215 GMT), was centered 200 km (125

miles) west-northwest of the coastal town of Sibolga and was at a depth of 31

km, the U.S. Geological Survey said. The epicentre was around 215 km from Medan,

the largest city on Sumatra.

LOS ANGELES – Minor damage has been reported in Mexico's northern Baja

California after a magnitude-7. 2 earthquake that was felt in Southern

California, Arizona and Nevada.

 

 

 

The largest earthquake in the region in nearly 18 years struck at 3:40 p.m.

Sunday more than 100 miles southeast of San Diego.

 

 

 

Tijuana Fire Chief Rafael Carillo says firefighters were rescuing people trapped

in a hotel elevator. He says firefighters so far are receiving reports of only

minor damage.

 

 

 

Near the epicenter, receptionist Juan Carlos Fernandez says there was minor

damage at the Crowne Plaza hotel in Mexicali. The damage includes broken pipes

and windows.

 

 

 

More than 5,000 Southern California Edison customers were affected, mostly with

30 seconds of flickering lights.

 

 

 

What I am afraid of is escalation of both Volcanic actvity and also earthquakes

due to plate shifts in relatively safer " " Zones.

Dear RR ji,

 

No I use my Rahu centric principles and some thumb rules I have created only for

Earthquakes. They are generally holding true to a major extent.

 

Under manmade disasters, in India, I can also include worst Naxal carnage in

history so far which took place yesterday.

 

I am afraid of things that may happen as days progress.
