I quote from encyclopaedia of hinduism by shree swami Harshanandaji.

" ......Radha is nowhere to be seen in the four well known sources of Krsna

story: MAHABHARATA, HARIVAMSA, VISHNUPURANA AND bHAGAVATA.     There is a

reference in Bhagavata (10.30.25 ff) to a fortunate gopi who had gone alone with

Krsna just before Raasakreeda.    The words used here - ANAYAARAADHITAH(

being propitiated by her) might have provided the seeds for the later concept of

Radha as the gopi dearest to Krsna. "

" The story of Radha in detail appears in the Krisnajanma khaanda of Brahma

vaivarta purana, a late work.     She is described here ashis shakti or

powerhaving emerged out of Krishna.     It is perhaps the poet Jayadeva that

has immortalised her through his well known lyric Gitagovinda.     Bengal

vaishnavism nourished by Chaitanya and others has given her a unique place in

Krishna theology and metaphysics. "

" It is plausible that the Prakritipradhaana )mother nature) of the earlier

snkhya system of philosophy has gradually got metamorphosed into Radha

personality  of the later vaishnava schools of theology "
