Doddacharya was born as the son of Periyappan, a descendant of Mudaliandan. He was born on the 10th of February, 1543 and departed from this world on the 3rd of October, 1607.The Doddacharyas have the initials KKC short form of , " Kovil Kandadai Chandamaruthan " . Kovil stand for the Srirangam temple, since they are related to Saint Ramanuja. Kandadai relates to the traditional services the family does for the Srirangam temple of managing the maintenance of ornaments, clothes, to the deities. The title of Chandamaruthan has an interesting anecdote. The Doddacharya was engaged in a debate with Appaya Dikshitar in the court of the ruler of Chidambaram. He won the contest with his expose of SadhuDeshini, a part of Desika Prabhandam. The Chidambaram court were traditional followers of Lord Nataraja (Lord Siva). Upon the Doddacharya reciting his verses, the people in the auditorium saw Govindaraja perumal (Lord Vishnu) manifesting in the court. Upon this miracle sevai (miraculous Darshan) the king bestowed the title of Chandamaruthan to the Doddacharya Sri PeriyappankAr svAmi who is from this illustrious lineage has been doing great service to the Lord of kaDikAchalam for years. His saulabyam knows no bounds. He mixes freely with his disciples and non disciples. He voluntarily reaches out to his disciples and is their friend, philosohper and guide. His administration capacity on controlling the day to day affairs of the temple, the relationship with the priests and the local authorities is par excellent. His knowledge of temple procedures and the history keeps him a class apart. He gives lectures on aruLcich cheyal and other related topics. His sishyAs are spread across the globe. To avoid an oncoming lorry the car in which svami was travelling swerved on the left side of the road and fell into a ditch. Svami fell between the seats of the vehicle and he sustained head injury and his thighs/bones got crusehd in the mishap. After initial treatment did not yield any results, svami was shifted to Sri Ramachandra hospital and after 15 days regained consciousness and is now able to open the eyes. He is neither able to talk or move. His thighs have to be operated upon. The disciples of svami have decided to collect funds to a. Meet his hospitalisation expenses and b. To form a corpus fund.
