nA- akAriyam

Standard-Higher Standard-Highest Standard

The acts specifically barred by sAsthrAs are termed as 'akAryam'. The words specifically not desired is termed as 'nA akAriyam'.

'nAakariyam sol ilAdhavar..' PeriyAzvAr Thriumzohi 4-4-1.

Sri PeriyAzvAr praises the inhabitants of Thiruk-kOshtiyUr that they never spell unwanted/undesired words. Their tongues do not indulge in proscribed acts -the act of the tongue in not uttering unwanted words.

What can be unwanted.

'Speak the Truth' 'Do not speak harm of others'.These are the basic postulates. This is normal prescription.

Talk about EmperumAn, one may easily summarize.

To put it in a nutshell, the tongue should have a taste for His divine name and deeds and talk so.

The inmates of the Divya Desam do not indulge in unwanted words emanating from them.

This is the standard

Going a bit farther, our body is full of impurities and so the tongue. Should we talk about Him? is the question coming up in the minds.

Says Kaliyan 'Aviyai aranga mAlai azhukkudambu echil Vaayal -thUimayil thoNDanEan nAn sollinEan thollai nAmam'-Thiruk kurunthANdakam 12.

Therefore, even uttering His name becomes a bit delicate when viewed in this angle.

This is Higher Standard

AchAryas feel that Uttering His name may not be enough. It is the devotees name the AchAryan's name that should be uttered to find fitting use for the tongue.

Sri Thiruk-kurugaipirAn piLLan visited a place in kongu nADu and was planning to take food there. However, finding that the devotees there were just chanting the divine name of EmperumAn but not AchArya - he got vexed and left that place.

Sri VAduga nambi also had the same feeling. One srevaishNavtie near him chanted

'Om namOA NarAyaNAya'. He felt that this is 'akAryam' for the tongue. It does not behove the tongue, which is meant for uttering the name of AchArya but is used for chanting that of EmperumAn's

This is the Highest Standard

Our AzvAr-s and AchAryas indeed set themselves Highest standards and follow.

From the pAsuram-s of one of the apostles of Highest Standards and vyAkyAnam of
