THE ARTHA PANCHAKAM

CLASSICAL ANALSYIS BY SRI AZHAGIYA MANAVALAP PERUMAL NAYANAR

Sri ParAsara BhaTTar gave the contents of TiruvAimozhi in four lines

'mikka iRai nilaiyum, meyyAm vuyir nilaiyum ,

thakka neRiyum thadaiyAgith thokkiyalum,

vUzh vinaiyum vAzh nilaiyum Odhum kurugaiyar Kone,

yAzhin isai vEdath iyal'

'மிகà¯à®•à¯ இறை நிலையà¯à®®à¯ மெயà¯à®¯à®¾à®®à¯ உயிர௠நிலையà¯à®®à¯

தகà¯à®• நெறியà¯à®®à¯ தà¯à®Ÿà¯ˆà®¯à®¾à®•à®¿à®¤à¯ தொகà¯à®•à®¿à®¯à®²à¯à®®à¯,

As observed earlier, our PurvAchAchAryas are adept in picking up philopshies from AzvAr-s verses.

The BhaTTar's thaniyan is a masterpiece, as this simply and briefly summarises the contents into the following five categories.

1. The nature of Brahman.

2. The nature of Atman.

3. The means .

4. The obstacles and

5. The goal or the end.

These are further elaborated by SvAmi NampiLLai in the IDu mahA pravesam I.

Sri Azhagia MaNavALap perumAL nAyanAr who goes on to analyse TiruvAimozhi in magnificent manner in AchArya Hrdhayam describes in detial in AchArya hrdhayam 211.

He correlated artha panchakam to 4 TiruvAimohzi-s of each of the five above categores.

Summariseing this into totally 20 TiruvAimozhi as the substance

in the 211th SUthram of AchArya Hrdhyam :

1. The nature of Brahamn-The Supreme - vuyir, thiN, aNai, onRu

உயரà¯, திணà¯, அணை ஒனà¯à®±à¯.

2. The nature of Atman: payil, yEARu, karu, kaN

பயிலà¯, à®à®±à¯, கà¯à®£à¯, கரà¯.

3. The means nOTRA nAlu

நோறà¯à®±à¯ நாலà¯

4. The obstacles: vIDu, sonnAl, oru,koNDa.

வீடà¯, சொனà¯à®©à®¾à®²à¯, à®’à®°à¯, கொணà¯à®Ÿ

5. The goal or the end -emmA, ozhivil, nedu, vEi.

எமà¯à®®à®¾, ஒழிவிலà¯, நெடà¯, வேயà¯

How do these tiruvAimozhi-s fit into this aspect?

These five aspects are significant and embedded in twenty TiruvAimozhi-s.

Let us go into each of these breifely.
