THE NATURE OF THE SOUL-VUYIR NILAI

 

It was seen in the preceding posting the four padhigam-s of thiru voi mozhi explaining the Lord's supremacy -iRai nilai was seen.

 

The pAsuram-s which go on to explain the nature of the soul- vuyir nilai- are listed as

 

a. payil; b;ERu; c; karu ; d kaN.

 

a. payil: This refers to the thiru voi mozhi 3-7 " payilum sudar oLi mUrthiyai"-பà¯à®¯à®¿à®²à¯à®®à¯ சà¯à®Ÿà®°à¯ ஒளி மூரà¯à®¤à¯à®¤à®¿à®¯à¯ˆ ௩-௭;wherein the subservience to the devotees of the Lord is emphasised. The nature of soul is that devotion to the devotees of the Lord.

 

b. ERu: This refers to the thiru voi mozhi 4-8 " ERALum iRaiyOnum"- à®à®±à®¾à®³à¯à®®à¯ இறையோனà¯à®®à¯ ௪-௮ wherein, ' Those which are not sutiable for this subservience are to be withered off' is spelt out.

 

c. kaN: This refers to the thiru voi mozhi " kaNgaL sivandhu"-கணà¯à®•à¯à®³à¯ சிவநà¯à®¤à¯ ௮-௮-௨ where out of the characteristics of the soul namely, knowledge, subservience and enjoyment, the subservience is the basic nature is explicitly given out. - Refer the lines "adiyEan vuLLAn, vudal vuLLAn"- 8-8-2.

 

c. karu: This is "karu mANikka malai mEAl"-கரà¯à®®à®¾à®£à®¿à®•à¯à®•à¯ à®®à¯à®²à¯ˆ மேà¯à¯®-௯ thiru voi mozhi 8-9. Here, the soul is subservient only to Him and for none else is narrated.

 

Thus in the above four padhigam-s,

 

--the nature of the soul being devotion to the devotees-

-- the withering off of those which are not apt for such devotion,

-- the basic nature of soul being subservience rather than knowledge/enjoyment -அடியேன௠உளà¯à®³à®¾à®©à¯

--and the subservience only Unto Him and none else (அனà¯à®©à®¿à®¯à¯à®°à¯à®•à¯à®•à¯ ஆகாத௠உயிரà¯) is categorically crystallised

 

Let us now move on to the TiruvAimozhi pAsuram-s which deal with the aspects of obstacles, as pointed out by Sri Azhagiya MaNavALap perumAL nAyanAr and explained by Periya JEyar.
