Guest guest
The nature of Goal We were in the midst of discussing the five aspects wonderfully highlighted by Sri Azhagia MaNavALap perumAL nAyanAr in SUthram 211 of AchArya Hrdhayam. At the stage of service to Lord (kainkaryam ), the AtmAn derives benefits resulting in joy, on performing kainkaryam. The happiness, however, should be for EmperumAn's happiness as a recepient of kainkaryam and not for ones own. The namap padham highlights this aspect. Our pUrvAchAryAs underscore the words 'sirippEa upEyam' 'சிரிபà¯à®ªà¯‡ உபேயமà¯â€™ Sri KUlasEkarap perumAL in perumAL tirumozhi spells this out as 'padiyAik kidanthu vun pavaLa vAi kANbEanEa" 'பà¯à®Ÿà®¿à®¯à®¾à®¯à¯à®•à¯ கிடநà¯à®¤à¯ உன௠பவளà¯à®µà®¾à®¯à¯ காணà¯à®ªà¯‡à®©à¯‡â€™ EmperumA’s smile is the ultimate goal' Sri ANDAL in the 29th pASuram of TiruppAvai points to this fact 'maTRAi nam kAmangaL mATRu' 'மறà¯à®±à¯ˆ நம௠காமஙà¯à®•à®³à¯ மாறà¯à®±à¯â€™ requesting the Lord to decimate any desire for oneself at that stage. Sri PiLLai LOkAchAryar most appropriately refers to the pAsuram in MumUkshuppadi 184 (dhvyap prakaraNam) 'மரà¯à®¨à¯à®¤à¯‡ நஙà¯à®•à®³à¯ போக மகிழà¯à®šà¯à®šà®¿à®•à¯à®•à¯ எனà¯à®±à¯ நினà¯à®±à®¤à®¿à®±à¯‡â€™ -à®®à¯à®®à¯‚கà¯à®¶à¯à®ªà¯à®ªà®Ÿà®¿ ௧௮௪ ’marunthEa nangaL bOgha magizchikku enRu ninRadhiREA' svAmi mAmunikaL giving out commentary for this quotes thus 'உனà¯à®©à¯à®Ÿà¯ˆà®¯ அனà¯à®ªà®µà®¤à¯à®¤à®¾à®²à¯‡ வரà¯à®®à¯ ஆனநà¯à®¤à®¤à¯à®¤à®¿à®±à¯à®•à¯ சà¯à®µ போகà¯à®°à¯à®¤à¯à®µà¯ பà¯à®¤à¯à®¤à®¿à®¯à¯ˆ விளைதà¯à®¤à¯, ஸà¯à®µà¯à®°à¯‚பதà¯à®¤à¯ˆ அழியாதபடி சாதà¯à®®à®¿à®ªà®¿à®•à¯à®•à¯à®®à¯ பேஶà¯à®•à®®à®¾à®©à®µà®©à¯‡â€™ 'The happiness derived out of your joy should be in consonant with the nature of Atman and Oh! Lord You are the medicine for any such deviations' This the crux of the 'நம௠ஸà¯à®ªà¯à®¤à¯à®¤à®¾à®°à¯à®¤à®®à¯. The kainkaryam is too good to resist such happiness and even 'nithyasUris'requests for this resistance from the Lord Himself. Such type of request not to have joy on kainkaryam but to derive it on EmperumAn's delight is the short point. Who, but He Himself will remove such distortion and therefore He is the medicine to relieve us from such self centred joy is the theme of Sri Nam AzvAr describing Him as 'The medicine to relieve us off from such mirth'. 'மரà¯à®¨à¯à®¤à¯‡ நà¯à®™à¯à®•à®³à¯ போக௠மழிசà¯à®šà®¿à®•à¯à®•à¯â€™ ஆழà¯à®µà®¾à®°à¯, லோகாசாரà¯,ஜீயர௠தà¯à®°à¯à®µà¯à®Ÿà®¿à®•à®³à¯‡ சரணமà¯. AzvAr requests to the Lord to remove any happiness which may arise on kainkaryam to oneself. The happiness should be on His happiness on receiving such service. But for these commentaries ( we will be still wondering what and why Azvar is seeking medicine for happiness), how can these treasures be unravelled, and this goes to reiterate that our pUrvAchAryas excavate rahasyArtham-s from AzvAr-s blessed works (aruLich cheyal) dAsan vanamamalai padmanabhan
