Sri:

Sri Brahmatantra Swatantra Parakala Guru Paramparayai Nama:

Dear Bhagavatas

It is that wonderful time of the year again, when all the

shishyas from all corners come together to celebrate

the Thirunakshatrams of Bhagavan Ramanuja and Sri Parakala

Matham Acharyas, including that of prAkritam Parakala Swamy

(chaitra mAsam, revati nakshatram).

During the lunar months of chaitram and vaishakham (chaitra mAsam

marks the beginning of new year, Yugadi, more popularly known as

Ugadi), the thirunakshatrams of several acharyas are observed, such

as Sri Parakala Swamy, Sri Ramanuja Parakala Swamy, Sri Periya

Parakala Swamy and none other than Sri Bhashyakarar Himself.

It has been a tradition at Sri Parakala Matham to observe all these

thirunakshatrams together on a grand scale. Also, over the last few

years, devotees from all across the globe, inside and outside of India

have participated in large numbers by sponsoring various sevas

and utsavams during the festival.

This year is no different from those that have passed in that respect.

During the 10 days that span between April 27th and May 6th,

Sri Parakala Matham will be observing these thirunakshatrams of

our Acharyas in a grand scale. The festival begins with the TN

of Sri Varada Ramanuja Swamy on April 27th and concludes

with Bhashyakarar's and Sri Periya Parakala Swamy's TN

observance on May 6th. Between those days, homams, ubhaya

veda parayanams, thirumanjanams and utsavams to

Sri Laxmi Hayagrivar are planned. The details of all these functions are

listed at

http://www.parakalamatham.org/festivals/jeeyartn2003.shtml

Sponsorships for various sevas are available and can be made from

the website itself. This is an invitation to all of you to come and

participate

in the celebrations. Those who wish to sponsor various sevas will

be able to submit their Sankalpam information from the website itself.

I look forward to your participation in this very important event.

sri parakala swamy thiruvadigale saranam!

Dear Swamy Desika BhakthAs:

One of the Magnificent Sri Sookthis created by Swamy Desikan is Tattva Mukta

KalApam. Here Swamy Desikan has covered all the VisishtAdhvaita Tattvams

brilliantly. Swamy Desikan out of His infinite affection for us has also written

a lucid commentary with the name of SarvArtha Siddhi to make it easy for us to

comprehend and hold the essence of the three tattvams in our hearts as

PurushAtha Saadhanam ( Means to attain the ultimate objective of one's life).

Tattva Mukta KalApam is a Tarkam ( Logic) Treatise. The purpose of engaging in

logic debates(Tarkam) is to comprehend the doctrines clearly and to defeat

opponents advancing incorrect views on the Tattvams. Tarkam has to be based on

PramaaNams or valid Knowledge approved by VedAs and Upanishads . VedAntha

Desikan , the GhantAvatAran of Thirumalai SrinivAsan was recognized by the Lord

of Srirangam as Kavi-Taarkika Simham for His skills as the greatest among poets

and Logicians . He blessed us with a pearl garland with five strands ( Tattva

Muktaa KalApam) . These strands are constituted by individual pearls of

sampradhAyic wisdom in the form of beautiful verses to remember for recitation .

There are 500 slOkams in Sragdhara meter .

The fruit of studying and following the upadEsam of Swamy Desikan in Tattva

Mukta Kalaapam with five strands of pearls are the clear comprehension of the

Five Tattvams that lead to get over the two delusions: (1) this inanimate body

( insentient) is ONE AND THE SAME AS the eternal Jeevan( sentient being with

Jn~Anam) (2) the other delusion that gets destroyed is the one that believes the

Jeevan ( AatmA , ChEtanam) is same as the Iswaran/ Lord of sentients and

insentients . These are two brahamams or delusions that one can be exposed to

from pursuit of Mathams that do not accept Vedam as PramANams or misintrepret

the true meaning of Vedams . These two Brahmams are classified as (1)

PrakrutyAtma Bramam or SareerAtmas Bramam and (2) SvatantrAtma Bramam . These

two delusions have to be chased away for progress in one's spiritual progress .

Once these two delusions are destroyed with the UpadEsams of Swamy Desikan in

Tattva Mukta Kalaapam , what is

left for us as anchor are the Tattva Trayam ( acheTanam , chEtanam and the

Iswaran , who is the Lord of Both). These two delusions cause grief during the

samsAric life , cause us unending cycles of births and deaths and therefore they

need to be banished with the upadEsams of our AchAryan to gain MokshAnanadham .

The second of the three tattvams is the Sentient being ( ChEtanam) with

Jn~Anam : aRivudaya Jeevan . Swamy Desikan uses two of the five strands to deal

with aRivu ( Buddhi) and Jeevan , which possesses that Buddhi/Jn~Anam. Thus two

strands are linked to the Jeevan and its Jn~anam .

The other three strands of the pearl necklace ( Makara KaNti) of Swamy Desikan

are:

(1) Jada dharavyam or the achEtanam/insentient/Prakruti without Jn~Anam or

aRivu. All insentients are born from Prakrurti or achEtana dhravyam .

(2) Iswaran , the embodiment of Jn~Anam : the Parama Purushan , Sriman

NaarAyaNan .

(3) adhravyam or the ten attributes ( tanmaikaL of dhravyam).

In summary , the five strands of Tattvams that fold into Tattva Trayam ( three

doctrines) are: (1) JADA DHRAVYAM/Inert Mater (2) JEEVAN/the individual Self

with Jn~Anam and distinct from ParamAtman (3) ISWARAN, the Lord of both Jada

dhravyam and Jeevan

(4) BUDDHI /Intellect-mind AND (5) ADHRAVYAM or non-substance .

To gain an understanding of Jada dhravyam and adhravyam , we can visualize a

lump of clay that is transformed by a potter into a Pot . Both the clay and the

pot are the Jada dhravyam. Its attributes like Roopam , rasam , gandham et al

are the adhravyams. Dravyam is the substratum for modification . adhravyam is

the non-substance , an attribute, which can not be the basis for another

quality.

In this series of articles , adiyEn will give a summary of the the first three

sarams(strands of Tattva mukta KalApam ) following the NavalpAkkam AchArya

Paramaprai on Desika Darsanam , which starts like all Sri VaishNava

SampradhAyams with Sriman Naatha Muni, Swamy AlavanthAr and continues on with

AchArya RaamAnujaa. This darsanam or Philosophy is recognized and revered as "

akhila tama: karSanam " or as the One that banishes all the darkness of nescience

( ajn~Anam).

There are 265 slOkams in the first three strands of Tattva Mukta KalApam .

adiyen will follow the summaries provided by Dr.V.VaasudEvAcchAr Swamy of

NavalpAkkam AchArya Paramparai in translating the essence of these 265 slOkams .

Please refer to Dr. VasudEvAcchAr Swamy's Volume I on Tattva Mukta KalApam for

additional details .
