The Misery at the Seaside

SvAmi Nam AzhvAr laments on separation from the Lord. On seeing the bleached tinge on the body of the bird 'nArai' AzvAr empathises with it. He senses betrayal by the Lord on the bird also. Assuming the whiteness of the bird due to unbearable separation from Empeurman, MARan sympathises with the bird and expresses the feeling, that like him, the bird has also been deceived by Emperuman

'நீயà¯à®®à¯ திரà¯à®®à®¾à®²à®¾à®²à¯ நெஞà¯à®šà®®à¯ கோடà¯à®ªà®Ÿà¯à®Ÿà®¾à®¯à¯‡ " AzvAr goes on in this fashion attribting all the natural events-like the tide or the waning moon etc. - are al due to the Lord's indifference.

The commentator explains these wonderfully. However, right at the beginning of this tiruvAimozhi 'vAyum thirai-ugaLum kANal mada nArAi' வாயà¯à®®à¯ திரை-உகளà¯à®®à¯ காணல௠மட நாராயà¯' ---திரà¯à®µà®¾à®¯à¯à®®à¯Šà®´à®¿ ௨-௧-௧- tiruvAimzohi 2-1-1, svAmi Nam piLLai, reasons out, why should AzvAr be at the seaside looking at the tides and the birds around the waves, the moon and so on, On feeling for separation from EmperumAn.

Here, he logically analyses and brings out wonderfully the tamil culture in this regard.

The Ancient tamil literature classifies the land into five categories.

1 .The sea and the places around the sea -neidhal -நெயà¯à®¤à®²à¯

2. The mountains and the places around the mountains- kurinji-கà¯à®±à®¿à®žà¯à®šà®¿

3. The beautiful gardens, plains, river valleys and groves and the wonderful places around it -marudham-மரà¯à®¤à®®à¯

4. The forests and the places around it -mullai-à®®à¯à®²à¯à®²à¯ˆ

5. The dried mixture of all these -desrety places-pAlai-பாலை.

Each place has got its significance. For example the togetherness of the beloveds is most cherished at marudham.

Similarly, the separation is expressed at the seaside-நெயà¯à®¤à®²à¯

The oft repeated words in this regard is ' pirindhavar iranguvadhu neidhal nilathiREa'

'The pair of souls embroiled in love but separated, generally feel at the feet of the tides, in the oceanic atmosphere.

Thus reasons Sri NampiLLai in IDu in avathArikai to the tiruvAimozhi 2-1-1

'pirindhavar iranguvadhu neidhal nilathilEyiREa'

The pining souls experience their distress in and around the seaside.

Such classic, logical reasoning is possible only for the exalted souls doused by blessings of none other than The Lord Himself.

That is the reason these vyAkyAnams stands out tall and outstaniding incomaparable with the works of ordinary mortals. Is it not?
