The answer is right there. It is Bhagavat kainkarya swaroopam an dnothing to do with liberating pitRs. Perhaps our ancestors, for whatever reason had hard time letting go rites/rutuals that were redundant So they wanted to cling on to it and reconciled it as Bhagavat Kainkaryam. If we understand Bhagavad-gita, anything we do is to be done as Bhagavat kainkaryam (yat karoshi, yadashnaasi, yajjuhoti, dadaasiyat- tat kurushva madarpaNam; we also see in Bg 18: 45 or so - yatah pravirttir bhootaanaam tyena sarvam idam tatam, swakarmaNaa tam abyarchya siddhim vindathi maanavah). Anything we do has to be done in that spirit. That sankalpam has to be there in spirit for any act or thought or lack of the as well- that is why purandara dasa said: while you are yawning, belching or stretching, say Krishna! So I never said don't do shraaddhams, do as many as you wish, but understand the perspective. No need to make a big deal of it as we are made to believe. If you strictly go by shaastras, I don't know of any person who is even qualified to do those Vedic rites even in Srirangam. You have to do agnikaaryam every day to even qualify to do those ritualistic yagnas. Think that our life itself is yagna. That is the message of the Upanishads. Not understanding that was the problem of Arjuna as well in Bg 1. The same Krishna who brushed it aside, made Pandavas to do final rites for the departed Kauravas, more as an honor than anything else. Was it needed , NO. We say good morning when we see some person. Will it be a bad morning if we did no say it? It will be considered bad not to greet, that's all. By foolishly clinging to out-placed, out-dated, and irrelevant rites, we are only undermining our religion. Just because something is written in Sanskrit, does not mean it is great. Read Garuda puraNam and all teh requirements for AntyeSHTI in teh Vedic apara karma rites- we can not follow them and as Bg itself says, you won't get any benefit, if you don't follow ordained rules in performing them. That is why the Lord showed us some simple ways: Yagnaanaam japa yagnosmi, and BG 18:66. But that Bg18:66 itself was complicated by many for whatever reason! They did not even think for once taht they diluted Lord's mesaage by writing 500 pages on something which is so simple and clear. Enjoy the scholarship, but don't look for guidance beyond words of BG. During those days, most people did not have much to do.
