Temple Renovation Request

In January I visited a number of temples near Mayavaram(Vaidheeswaran Koil, Koothanoor, Thirumayyichoor, Srirangam andKoviladi).Among these the famous temple at TirupperNagar (Koviladi) is in avery bad state, and renovation is being planned. This is EIGHTHamong the 108 divya desams. There is one family taking care of the temple and the Gurukkal & hiswife told me that it is becoming increasingly difficult even to makethe Neivedhyams on a daily basis. The Neivedhyam here is 'Appams',and the reclining Lord is known as 'Appakudathaan'.If wish to contribute to the temple, please send in your donations directly to:Shri V. Varadaraja Iyengar, Sannadhi Kainkaryam,Koviladi Aghraharam, Koviladi, 631 105,Thanjavur District, TamilNadu, IndiaRaja

The telephone number that Shri Varadaraja Iyengar gave me is 04362-281421.

When I went there I gave him some amount for his immediate use. I've also collected a sum of Rs.3500/-- which I've sent today.

I'm sending the amount directly as a draft to Shri Varadaraja Iyengar, payable to him at Thiruvaiyaru. I'm not aware of any Trust being formed, though I'd like to be in the loop, if something like that happens.

As someone suggested, it'd be a good idea to have a fixed deposit opened, and the interest used for the daily Pooja / Naivedhyam.

Unfortunately, I'll not have the time to co-ordinate this. However, if some one opens a fixed deposit for this purpose, please do let me know - I'll be able to send some amount.

A good place to start would be to talk to Shri Varadaraja Iyengar and check with him the best course of action.

Thanks and Regards,

Raja

Dear Raja,

The temples, especially of antiquity, in India are under administration of state Governments. In Karnataka it is under Karnataka state mujarai commission. This applies to both impoverished and wealthy temples. For example, both Thirumala and Guruvayur are under respective Govt. The man in-charge of Thirumala board, is a Reddy (atheist/rationallist) appointed by AP chief minister Y.S. Paul Reddy. Both their parents were prison cell mates in the 1970s for their anti-national communist activities. Their sons have done better, thanks to AP and Thirumala. Guruvayur devasam board typically has many communists, as Kerala has a heavy left leaning out look and also often led by communists. Yatha raaja tatha prajaah.Money cpollected by Thirumala board is used to promote all religious institutions by the Govt including Churches and Masjids. It is also used to fund Haj pilgrimage.

None of the Churches or Mosques or their institutions (colleges. hospitals) are controlled by Govt. For example St. John's college does not have to adhere to caste based quota, whereas Thimmayya college has to adhere to. However if Thimmayya became Thimmayya John, then it will not have to adhere. This will not stop even if you open a college by any Hindu politician or leaders name. RK mission in Bengal, not able to bear Marxist intrusions, tried to distant themselves from Hinduism, telling that, they are above and beyond Hinduism. That way they would have gotten minority religion status. But our courts said, RK mission is Hindu!

My humble advice is that the Lord can take care of himself and is not restricted to any divyadesham. If you want to help a divyadesham for nostalgic reasons, just give cash to archakar of that temple or help educate his children. That is more important than offering kavacham etc. to God, which will only target it even more so for vandalism/abuse from within and without. Nobody cares for a Hindu in India (or for that matter in bhuvana trayam). If that Hindu happens to be a Brahmin, worse. The lowliest among them is a decaying temple archaka. This does not mean that all others are happy in India. There are millions who don't know when their next meal comes. However, there is at least a plan to help them on books- while exactly the opposite for a Brahmin.

Hindus are stuck between Pseudo-secularists, pseudo-fundamentalists, Marxists, Missionaries, Gandhi-Nehruvites, and Mullahs- all with a bigger plan; while the Hindu Mahants have their heads buried in sands and can not go beyond their narrow divisive and destructive sectarian views.

The gloom I have painted here is to awaken us to ground reality- not that we can or we will or we should do anything much about it. But it is sometimes good to understand where we stand.

KST

Re: Temple Renovation Request

Strange as it may sound, Shri Varadaraja Iyengar called me atleast twice in the past one week, to specifically request me to REMOVE the renovation/donation request "from the internet" (sic) !!

I'm unable to understand why he doesn't want donations now ! When I asked him why I should "remove it from the internet", he said 'corruption has increased' - I didn't probe him further.

I sending this info, for whatever it is worth.

There is a possibility that I may visit Koviladi once again in the middle of May and so I'd update if there's anything new.

Thanks and Regards,

Raja
