Namaskarams,

Would it be possible to archive these under Scribd too? That way it would provide to serve also as a searchable repository.

Thanks and Regards,

Swamin, It is a big subject which cannot be covered in an e-mail, i believe. In short I can say is thatNitya karmas for a fourth category person are doiing prayer while rising from bed, taking bath, wearing sudha vastram, wearing thiruman kappu, doing puja, reciting stotras, learning sampradaya matters, etc. These are to be done every day and hence are called nitya karmas. Naimittika karmas are those karmas that are to be done on prescribed days. Examples are observing Ekadasi prescriptions, Amavasya prescriptions, Shradh prescriptions etc. Kamya karmas are the karmas that we do ourselves, like sumangali prarthanai, Saturday upavasam, Sravana upavasam, etc. Hope this clarifies the basics. ramayan af valmiki and Kamban-Aranyakanda-18-Ravanacarrying Seetha

18.Ravana carrying SeethaSeetha was wearing a garment of yellow silk and shining ornaments ofgold and she looked like a lightning while Ravana was looking like avolacano with his fiery hued cloth moving in the wind. Valmki furthercompares the cloth worn by Seetha moving in the air to the red cloud atnoon., which is an impossibility. This and the comparison of Seetha tolightning indicated calamity for Ravana. Her face was like a lotusplucked from its soil and lost its lustre. She was shining like a secondmoon from the dark cloud, symbolized by Ravana, another weird happeningserving as a bad omen. Seetha with her golden colour seen with the darkhued Ravana looked like a golden girdle around blue sapphire. Theimplication is that only silver goes well with blue sapphire and goldseemed out of place. The speed with which Ravana was going was indicated by the flowers fromthe head of Seetha scattering on all sides and again falling on Ravana, who is compared by Valmiki to the high mountain of Meru shining with clear stars. Seetha was like a fire in the sky, which is bad omen like acomet. Her ornaments fell down on earth like the stars, says Valmiki, ontheir merit being exhausted. It is supposed that those who have acquiredmerit, punya, become stars and after their merits are exhausted theyfell down to earth to take rebirth. The pearl garland falling from theneck of Seetha was like Ganges falling from the heavens. The great wind that rose from the speed of Ravana created big noise inthe trees and the birds were chirping loudly as though to reassureSeetha, while the aquatic beings seeing the lotuses shake violentlybecame afraid. The wild animals of the forest ran along as though theywanted to threaten Ravana. The mountains with their high peaks andwaterfalls flowing from them seem to cry with uplifted arms. Even theSun lost his lustre. Thus the whole nature was struck with sorrow onSeetha being carried away.Seetha tried her level best to dissuade Ravana from taking her away byinsulting him and threatening him of dire consequences. She called hima coward in spite of his bragging about his valour earlier, since hecame like a thief when Rama and Lakshmana were not there. She said thatthere was nothing to be proud of in slaying an old bird like Jatayu andhe could not stand in front of Rama and that was why he was flying awayspeedily. Seetha told him that he could not bear the shower of arrows ofRama and Lakshman like a bird caught in a forest fire. She said she willnever agree to his wish and would not live long and Ravana was nearinghis death and hence he is acting like a man who pursues wrong path at the time of death. mrthyukaale yaThaa marthyo vipareethaani sevathe.Ravana , she said, will not escape from Rama wherever he runs andreminded him that Rama killed 14000 rakshasas with Khara and Dhooshanasingle handed. But Ravana under the spell of fate that was causing hisend, did not pay heed and carried her off.Seetha was looking on all sides to see whether anyone would come for herresque and saw five monkeys on the top of a hill near the river Pampaand tearing a part of her upper garment, tied her ornaments in it andthrew it towards them hoping that they will give it to Rama when he camesearching for her. These were Sugriva and his followers hiding in theRsyamooka hill to escape from Vali. They looked at her and saw what washappening and later Rama heard this from them. The commentators say that Sugrive looked up and was seen by Seetha andhence he regained his kingdom soon afterwards due to her kataksha whichproves that to get the grace of the Lord first one should get the graceof the divine mother.Ravana was elated in taking her away as he crossed the area of theasrama without opposition not knowing that he was carrying his death inhis lap, as though carrying a fierce and poisonous cobra, says Valmiki.`Thaam jahaara susamhrshto raavaNo mrthyum aathmanaH; uthsangenaivabujageem theekshna dhashtraam mahaavishaam.'Thus crossing the sea Ravana reached Lanka with Seetha. Valmiki saysthat the sea was agitated to see the act of Ravana and the waves of theocean became silent along with the creatures in it. The celestial beingslike the siddhas and charanas saw him and predicted his end to happenvery soon.

Vedic Gods: Sooryan , Part II

Posted by: "Dr.V.Sadagopan" yennappan sadagopan10510

Fri Mar 13, 2009 7:07 pm (PDT)

SrI:Dear VedAbhimAnis:Let us start this posting with a prayer to Sooryan from Rg Veda translated by R.T.H. Griffin : 1. His bright rays bear him up aloft , the God who knoweth all that lives, Soorya , that all may look on Him.2. The constellations pass away , like thieves , together with their beams ,before the all-beholding Sun.3. His herald rays are seen afar refulgent o'er the world of men ,like flames of fire that burn and blaze.4.Swift and all beautiful art Thou , Oh Soorya, maker of light ,illumining all the radiant realm.5.Thou goest to the hosts of Gods , thou comest hither to mankind, hither all light to behold.6. With that same eye of thine wherewith thou lookest brilliant VaruNa ,upon the busy race of men.7. Traversing sky and wide mid-air , thou meetest with Thy beams our days,Sun , seeing all things that have birth.8. Seven bay steeds harnessed to Thy car bear Thee , Oh Thou farseeing One,God, Soorya, with the radiant hair.9. Soorya hath yoked the pure bright Seven , the daughters of the car; with these,His own dear team , He goeth forth.10. Looking upon the loftier light above the darkness , we have come to Soorya ,God among Gods , the light that is most excellent.11. Rising this day , Oh rich in friends , ascending to the loftier heaven,Soorya , remove my heart's disease , take from me this yellow hue.12. To Parrots and to starlings ,let us give away my yellowness,or this my yellowness , let us transfer to Haritaala trees.13. With all His conquering vigour this Aaditya hath gone up on high, giving my foe into mine hand: let me not be my foeman's prey. Soorya NamaskAramIt will be appropriate to start with the 12 MantrAs for Soorya NamaskAram:1.( PraNavam) MithrAya Nama:2.( " ) RavayE Nama:3.( " ) SooryAya Nama:4.( " ) BhAnavE Nama:5.( " ) Khagaaya Nama: 6.( " ) PushNE nama:7.( " ) HiraNyagarbhAya Nama:8.( " ) MaarichAya Nama:9.( " ) AadityAya Nama:10.( " ) SaavitrE Nama:11.( " ) ArkAya Nama:12.( " ) BhAskarAya Nama:There are many mantrams in Rg Vedam addressed to Adityan:1) Adhityasccha BuBudhAnA--4.1.182) Adhityaa ava hikhyAtAdhi--8.45.113) AdhityAnAm VasUnAm RudhriyANAm--10.48.114) AdhityAnAmavasA nUtanEna--7.51.15) Adhityaa rudra Vasava: --3.8.86) AdhityA rudhrA vasavO--7. 35.147) AadhityA ViSvE Marutasccha--7.51.38) AdhityAsO ati snigdhO--10.126.59) AdhityAsO adhitaya: --7.52.110) AdhityAsO adhitirmArdhayntAm--7.51.211) Adhityairindhra: sagaNO--10.157.212) AdhittE asya veeryasya--1.132.513) AdhittE viSvE kratum--1.68.2 There are many Rg Veda Mantrams for Adityaas , Aditi and other related gods . Some times it will be addressed to Bhaga , SavitAr , Aryaman, Pushan et al.Here are some samplings from Rg Vedam(Translation: R.Griffith):" Well knoweth Savitar , O child of water, where ocean firmly fixt , overflowed its limit "...." May the God Savitar , rich in goodly trasures, filling the region , borne by steeds, come hither ---In His hand holding much that makes men happy , lulling to slumber and arousing creatures."......." Savitar, golden haired , hath lifted eastward bright with sun beams , His eternal lustre"." May Sooryaa guard us out of heaven , Vaayu from the firmament and Agni from terrestrial spots". " AdityAs ! Ye most mighty Ones , grant our children and their seed extended term of life that they may live long days." This light , the best of lights , supreme , all conquering , winner of riches, is exalted with high land.....all lighting, radiant , mighty as the Sun to see , He spreadeth wide unfailing victory and strength ...Beaming forth splendour with Thy light , Thou hast attained heaven's lustrous realm ...By Thee were brought together all existing things, possessor of all Godhead , all effecting God"."We will invoke strong, early conquering Bhaga , the son of Aditi , the great supporter ". There are similar prayers to Aryaman , Mitra , VaruNa and VishNu as one of the twelve AdhityAs . Here is the One for VishNu (7th Book XCIX) :" None who is born or being born , God VishNu , hath reached the utmost limit of Thy grandeur . The vast high vault of heaven hast Thou supported and Fixed Earth's eastern pinnacle securely ".During Rg Vedic Time, Agni , Indhran , Sooryan were the dominant gods as seen from the Mantras addressed to them . Sri-vaishnava diary(panchAnga kurippu)/Nitya-Naimittika and Kaamya K

Posted by: "Dr.V.Sadagopan" yennappan sadagopan10510

Fri Mar 13, 2009 7:47 pm (PDT)

Dear AastikAs:There was a question from one of the Members about Kaamya KarmAs after he read the 23rd ebook on Sri-VaishNava diary of Srihayagrivan series by U.Ve. N. Sowmyanarayanan Swamy (http://www.srihayagrivan.org ) Swami gave an informative response , which would eb of interest to many of you . I am pleased to share it with you and thank Sriman Soumya Narayanan Swami.V.SadagopanMOderator, Oppiliappan egroup ********************************************************************************************************************Dear All, The queryst wants some explanation to "K-1. KAmyArtha vratam" of PancAnGa kurrippu drafted by me.This item says "they run the risk of anti effects, for non-adherence of prescriptions strictly". Explanations are :kAmyArtha vratam = Those acts undertaken with the goal of achieving some material benefits like wealth, position, extended life, destruction of enemies etc. How & what to do = these are prescribed in sAstras.Non-adherence of prescription = any lacune in time, place, method, material etc; or shortfall/ excess in manta/ tantra/ swara or even conviction and commitment etc. Examples are already given as, Monday/saturday upavAsam, sravaNA vratam etc..Resulr = if duly performed , sure to secure results. If not performed as prescribed = doer loses not only the result; but also sure to face anti-results. A case in example is sOmasarma, a brahmin, who not only failed to achieve wealth, (for which he started the yagnya) because he could not complete it (due to his death); but also got transformed as brahma rAkshas - This is explained in kaisika purAna.Sum-up = there is no compulsion to perform kAmya karmas. but shd we venture and not complete it, sans shortfalls explained above, for non-achievement of results (and begetting anti-results) let us not blame sAstrAs.Still there may arise one doubt - Why sAstrAs shd mention about kAmya karmAs at all?Answer is : sAtrAs are common to one and all - good, bad and indifferent. If it caters to only good, then it may be tainted as "pro-good". To avoid this situation, it says everything. In otherwords, it should or can not be blamed for the results; but only performers.Another question is : why people choose such risky acts ? Answer is : they are driven by their karma and the resultant mind-set.Solace = As against this, shd there be any shortfall in nitya/ naimittika, srivaishNavAs don't face risk of non-result (since they do it for the pleasure of SrimannArAyanA; and ther are no anti-effects - so say sAstrAs. Hence prudence shd drive not to ommit nitya/naimittikAs and venture into kAmyAs.Hope, it is clear. Pl. feel free to shoot queries. I'll try to explain, with the grace of AcAryas and to the best of my ability.dAsan sowmyanArAyaNan23rd Feb 6.30 p.mI have doubt in one of the things, like in this below para, it is mentioned that, quote "They run the risk of anti-effects, for non-adherence of prescriptions, strictly)" and was wondering, if you can shed some more light on this .K-1 : kAmyArtha (vAra / nakShatra) vratam------------------
