Guest guest
The five are for paadyam (washing feet). arghyam (washing hand), Achamaneeyam (cleansing mouth), snapanam (bath) and finally for parigraham (for collecting the waters offered from other 4 vessels). Usually, this water is given to devotees as theertham (sacred water) for both drinking (three sips) and for sprinkling over the head). Guest guest
The middle pathram is for suththothakam, After taking water from any vessel and completing the purpose like paadyam etc, the holy water is then poured into the 6th vessel, from which only we get the theertha prasatham. After pouring the water in 6th vessel, the uthrakarni(spoon) is immersed in the 5th vessel , and taken out with water for cleaning the spoon, here again the water is poured in the 6th vessel. The purpose is after every samarpanam, the spoon is cleaned, that is the hygene level our Acharyas practiced. You may refer to Lifco's thiruvathan kramam book. adiyen raman --- On Thu, 3/9/09, Koti Sreekrishna <tatachar wrote: Koti Sreekrishna <tatacharRe: pancha patram in perumal temples Date: Thursday, 3 September, 2009, 11:43 PM The five are for paadyam (washing feet). arghyam (washing hand), Achamaneeyam (cleansing mouth), snapanam (bath) and finally for parigraham (for collecting the waters offered from other 4 vessels). Guest guest
Dear Sri Raman, Thanks for the clarification. So the middle paatram is for rinsing after each offering. It is possible that at some point we were taking the paadyam, arghyam, aachamaneeyam and snapanam sacred waters separately. In other words for each puja, four times three. May be the next innovation was to combine the water from four offerings into a sixth vessel (parigraham) and take this combined sacred waters just 3 times. Saves time and effort. Even after this innovation, we have retained "Pancha paatram" term, because of its past usage, while we actually use "Shadpaatrams". It is common to take Sri Paada theertham of once Achaarya. I wonder, when paada puja is performed to a Guru's paada or to paadukai, we may be doing only paadyam. Otherwise, even if we did the other four, we may be part taking only paadyam as sacred water. Hence the name sri paada theertham. dAsan KST raman ramanuja iyengar <ramanramanujan Fri, Sep 4, 2009 1:37 am Re: pancha patram in perumal temples The middle pathram is for suththothakam, After taking water from any vessel and completing the purpose like paadyam etc, the holy water is then poured into the 6th vessel, from which only we get the theertha prasatham. After pouring the water in 6th vessel, the uthrakarni(spoon) is immersed in the 5th vessel , and taken out with water for cleaning the spoon, here again the water is poured in the 6th vessel.
