1.8.1

 

Odum puLLERicchoodum thaNthuzhaai

needuninRavai aadum ammaanE

 

The SupremeLord will ascend the Garuda and go everywhere, wears the cool tulasi leaves, thus gets joy with the association of those which give pleasure to Him.

 

OdumpuL Eri- Garuda. The Lord will please Garuda whenever he requests , by riding on Him and not only when the Lord needed him.

 

Choodum thaN thuzhai- He wears the tulasi to please her and not for His pleasure alone.

 

needu ninravai aadum- Thus He enjoys the service of the nithya sooris forever by enabling them to enjoy Him equally.

 

Azvar praises the arjavam, rectitude of conduct or open heartedness of the Lord in this decade. There is no untruth in all His doings. Alavandar in his sthothra rathna says,

vasee vadhaanyo guNavaan rjuH SuchiH, meaning that the Lord renders Himself in the power of His devotees, is bountiful, by giving them what ever they desire for, is full of auspicious qualities, pure and rjuH, guileless and reliable.

 

Azvar goes on to say that not, only the Lord was showing His arjavam in respect of the nithya sooris but also in His incarnations, in the following verses.

 

 

1.8.2

 

ammaanaai pinnum emmaaNbum aanaan

vemmaa vaai keenda semmaa kaNNanE

 

Being thus as the supreme Lord He also took incarnations which were even more glorious. He is the one who tore the mouth of the fierce horse, the asura Kesi.

 

In His incarnations the Lord showed His leela in assuming various forms but His arjava consisted in His doing dhushtanigraha and Sishtaparipalana. Here Azvar refers to the Krishnavathara in which The Lord killed the asura who came in the form of a horse. The asura Kesi was sent by Kamsa to kill Krishna, who extended his hand and putting it in his mouth throttled the asura and killed him.

 

Vemmaa means the fierce horse

 

Vaai keenda- killed him by putting the hand in his mouth

Semmaa kaNNan- one who has large red eyes, the lotus like eyes

 

ammaan aai- The Lord who never gave up His supreme status even in the incarnations

 

pinnum emmaaNbum aanaan- He became all the incarnations and archa forms thus.

 

1.8.3

 

kaNNaavaan enRum maNNOr viNNOrkku

thaNNaar vEnkata viNNOr veRpanE

 

He is the apple of the eye for the devas as well as the humans always and He manifested in the cool mountain of Venkata.

 

In this verse Azvar speaks of the archavathara of the Lord in Thirumala, where both devas and human beings worship Him simultaneously. His arjava consists in abiding on the Thirumala to make it easy for both the devas and humans to reach Him.

 

He could be reached only by the nithyasooris like Garuda and Anantha in Vaikunta. He comes down to the milky ocean for devas to approach Him. He further came down as the incarnations for the ordinary mortals to see Him and enjoy His company. But in the incarnations He is available only to a portion of humanity whereas in His archa form He could be worshipped by all. His standing in Thirumala is extolled by Azvar as being special because He is accessible to both the devas and the humans.

 

kaNNaavaan enRum- He is the apple of the eye always

 

maNNOrviNNOrkku- for humans, (maNNOr- earthlings) and devas ( viNNOr- devas who reside in viNN, heaven)

 

thaN aar- the cool

 

venkataveRpan- the resident of Thiruvala, Srinivasa.veRpu means mountain.

 

viNNaaR- like heaven. The Thiruvenkata hills is akin to heaven.
