O Lord srI rAma, son of King dasaratha! O Overlord of Kings! O Lord whose beauty is like that of a hundred Manmataas ! O Lord well-praised by this tyAgarAja! Even if one is lives a hundred years or, even if one rules this whole World, what is the use of such a livelihood without Your grace? What is the use of such a livelihood without Your grace in which You do not soothe me by explaining the inner secrets of the World by shining fittingly before me at the time of performing worship and prayer?

Word-by-word Meaning

P O Lord srI rAma, son of King dasaratha! What is the use (Emi) of such a livelihood (bratuku) (bratukEmi) without (lEni) Your (nI) grace (daya)?

A Even (aina) if one is lives a hundred (nUru) years (vayasu) (literally old) or, even (gAni) if one rules (Elina) this (I) (nUrainayI) whole World (vasudhanu) (vasudhanElina), O Lord srI rAma son of King dasaratha! What is the use of such a livelihood without Your grace?

C O Overlord (adhirAja) of Kings (rAja) (rAjAdhirAja)! O Lord whose beauty (lAvaNya) is like that of a hundred (sata) Manmataas – Lord (rAja) of rati – (wife of Manmataa)! O Lord srI rAma son of King dasaratha! O Lord well-praised (sannuta) by this tyAgarAja! what is the use of such a livelihood without Your (nIdu) grace in which You do not (sEyani) soothe (rAji) me by explaining (delipi) (literally informing) the inner (antaranga) secrets (marmamu) of the World (lOka) (lOkAntaranga) by shining (rAjilli) fittingly (pondugAnu) before (eduTa) me (pondugAneduTa) at the time (vELa) of performing worship (pUja) and prayer (japamula)?

Notes –

P – dasaratha rAma – this is how it is given in the books of TKG and CR. However, in the book of TSV/AKG, it is given as ‘dAzarathI rAma’. The same (‘dAsarathI’) as an alternative in the book of TKG. This needs to be checked. Any suggestions???

C – rAji – this has been derived from urdu word ‘rAzi’ which means ‘consent’, ‘agree’ ‘pacify’ ‘soothe’ etc. among other meanings. This meaning seems to be more appropriate.

C – sannuta nIdu – this is how it is given in all the books other than that of TKG, wherein the word ‘nIdu’ is not given. This needs to be checked.

Additional Comments By SrI V Sadagopan:

In this Naayaki Raaga Kriti, Sadhguru Swamigal celebrates the Kshamma/dayaa guNam of Lord Raama chandra. He asks a rhetorical question: “Of what use is life, if it is not touched by Your dayaa (grace)?†He points out that a long life and possession of Iswaryams of every kind including that of being a king would not amount to anything unless one has been blessed with the Lord's grace. The goal of life is to earn the dayaa of the Lord and thru which enjoy tranquility in life. Saint ThyAgarAja was blessed to speak with the Lord every day and had the greatest bhAgyam of seeing Him with His own eyes at ThiruvayyARu, once with LakshmaNan and on another occasion with SitA PirAtti and AnjanEyaer.

Naayaki is an ubhaya vakra ShAdava sampoorNa janya Raagam of the 22nd MeLam, Karahara Priyaa. Chatusruti rishabham, Suddha Madyamam, Chatusruti dhaivatam, Kaisiki nishAdham and SaadhAraNa GaandhAram are the svarams used besides shadjamam and panchamam (amsa svara). In this UpAnga Raagam, GhaandhAram is varjam in avarOhaNam. GhAndhAram and NishAdham are dheergam (elongated) and they also happen to be the jeeva and Kampita svarAs. It is a sarva-kaalika raagam (can be sung at all times). PDPSNDP is a special Prayogam in Naayaki. SwAmigaL has two more kritis in this soft, serene and delicate Naayaki raagam: (1) Kanukonu soukhayamu (2) Nee bhajana ghaana. Nayaki is closely allied to DarbhAr, which is known as “adhunaa Prasiddham†(of recent antiquity) compared to Naayaki. Soukhyam is the key description of this Raaga, which is devoid of brigaas.

One is reminded of the Dayaa Satakam of Swamy Desikan, when one thinks about the raagam Naayaki. The 18th slOkam of Dayaa satakam celebrates this Dayaa guNam:

AnuguNa dasArpitEna Sridhara KaruNE samaahita snEhaa

Samayasi tama: prajAnAm sAstra mayEna sthira pradheepEna

(Meaning): Oh Dayaa dEvi of Lord SrinivAsaa! In this world, people light up lamps with oil and wick. The light from that lamp will help people follow the right path instead of stumbling into wrong paths. You are the Mother of the people of this Universe. All people are Your children. The love that You show them is the oil in that lamp. The help You give them at the appropriate times is the wick. Your VedAs and SaastrAs are the eternal lamp. Their ajn~Anam is chased away by Your light. You help Your children thus with the lamp of Bhagavath Saastram out of Your dayaa guNam. (Your Lord gains the name of DayaaLu through You—slOkam 26; You become the boat to ferry us across the fearsome ocean of SamsAram –slOkam 38; You (Dayaa devi) are like a deva gangai and You transform all the sinners free of their paapams and taapams---SlOkam 54).
