What are svadharma and paradharma?

Good question. We need to understand this as Gita intended

and not as traditionally understood. Please read these

verses from Bhagavad-Gita (Ref: The New Bhagavad-Gita:

3:35Following one’s own dharma,

even if it is less glamorous

is better than trying to excel

in another one’s dharma.

 

Here, ‘one’s own dharma’ refers to ‘work in tune with one’s inherent nature’.

One should not try to imitate others,

but be natural, free from deceit, and true to oneself.

By staying close to what we are intrinsically good at,

we attain personal success and also become valuable to society.

See 18:45-48.

 

It is better to die

upholding one’s dharma;

following the dharma of others

is worse than death.

 

Krishna indicates that it is better for Arjuna, the warrior, to die in this war,

rather than follow a path unsuited to his nature,

which will end up being dangerous for him.

 

 

18:45One attains perfection

when he is committed to his work.

I will tell you how one can find fulfillment

by pursuing one’s own profession.

 

18:46One finds fulfillment

by working in harmony with his natural abilities

and making that as an offering to the One,

who pervades this universe and

from whom all creatures have arisen.

 

18:47Try to excel in your own dharma,

even if it is less glamorous.

It is better than following others dharma.

You will not experience any guilt

if you follow your inherent nature.

Here, ‘dharma’ is a reference to the essence of one’s personality

including his attitude, talent, and nurturing environment.

 

18:48It is only natural that all pursuits have some defect,

just as fire is often obscured by smoke.

 

But, one should not abandon work

suited to one’s own nature,

simply because it is less glamorous.

 

No pursuit is ever perfect – there are always hurdles in the way.

When your work is suited to your aptitude and interest,

the hurdles seem insignificant, however big they might be.

When you try to imitate others and work against your own nature,

every small hurdle seems substantial.
