As head of the ashram, between 1963 and 1989, Srimad Thirukkudanthai Andavan established 15 centres of the ashram across the country. He was responsible for construction of various temples in Bangalore, Maharashtra, New Delhi, Secunderabad and Neyveli. He was also instrumental for establishing `sannidhis' for Sri Desikan at several places and also Veda, Sastra and Prabandha patasalas at Srirangam. Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, Vice chairman of the National Executive Committee of the ashram V. S. Narasimhan said the nine-day `mahothsavam' began on Tuesday with the Paduka Vihara Vidwath sadas. While the sadas would be held till Saturday (March 24), the Veda, Prabantha and Grantha parayanams would be held from March 24 to 28. Fortysix scholars of Veda, Agamam and Sastra would be honoured on March 27 and 28 as part of the mahothsavam. Srimad Andavan Sri Rangaramanuja Mahadesikan, head of the Ashram, who identified these scholars, will confer the title on them, he said. Free spectacles would be distributed through the Sankara Netrayala to 2,000 persons — 800 each in Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra and 400 in Guwahati.
