A GREAT VAISHNAVA PILIGRIM PLACE " THONDANUR "

OR CORRECTLY KNOWN AS " KERE THONDANUR " , MANDYA DISTRICT, KARNATAKA.

Brief History of the place:

As we know Sri Sri Ramanujacharya, who hurriedly came out of Srirangam in

Tamilnadu, settled down in Thondanur for an extended period, about 1000 years

ago. From here Sri Ramanuja propagated Vishisthadwaitha Siddhantha in Karnataka.

Working from Thondanur, he reinstated Sri Sri Thirunarayana temple at Melukote,

which is about 10miles/15km away. After a great search for Uthsavamoorthy for

Thirunarayanaswamy, Sri Yathiraja found the beautiful moorthy at Delhi with the

Badshah’s daughter " BIBI " . It is said that Sri Yemberumanar affectionately

called the moorthy " SELVAPILLAI VAARAAI " (Selvapillai please come) and the

Uthsavamoorthy started coming closer & closer to Him. This is the moorthy which

we have in Melukote today.

During Sri Yathiraja’s stay at Thondanur, he answered questions from several

other religious heads simultaneously from behind a curtain in the form of

ADISHESHA. He is seen in ADISHESHA AVATHAR in Sri Narasimhar temple. While at

Thondanur, Sri Yathiraja showed some of his powers in driving away the Evil

Spirits from the daughter of King Bitti Devaraya. Impressed by his TEJAS BEARING

PERSONALITY, TEACHINGS AND POWERS of Sri Ramanuja, the Hoysala King BITTI

DEVARAYA, who was a Jain, got blessed by no other than Sri Yatheendra, became a

Vaishnava and was given the name of " VISHNU VARDHANA " .

Sri Ramanuja installed " THONDAR " as a high priest of SRI NAMBINARAYANA temple at

Thondanur to take care of the temple. Yemberumanar is responsible for the

beautiful lake at Thondanur. It is said that the water has never dried since it

was created. There are small man-made waterfalls and canals, making it a great

water sport attraction particularly for the kids. The water is so clear that the

king TIPPU SULTAN called it " MOTI TALAB " , as one could see the PEARL fallen

from his broken necklace in the clear waters. Apart from Nambinarayana temple

there are SRI KRISHNA TEMPLE & SRI NARASIMHA TEMPLE.

Three forms of Sri Ramanuja are 1) THAMAR UHANDA TIRUMENI (where he was born) at

Sriperumbudur – just on the outskirts of Chennai, TN, 2) THAAN AANA TIRUMENI (

where he studied and achieved the Doctrine) at Srirangam, TN and 3)THAAN UHANDA

TIRUMENI ( who entered his own moorthy) at Melukote, Karnataka.

Thondanur was Sri Ramanujacharya’s – our Acharya’s most important place of stay

in Karnataka from where he propagated Sri Vaishnava Siddantha. Therefore, it

should be an endeavor of all VAISHNAVA DEVOTEES and in particular SRIVAISHNAVAS

to visit this great Holy Place where our Achaarya had lived and walked on the

soil. This place is approximately 135km from Bangalore and 45km from Mysore.

THE TRUST: To help devotees, " PRATHIVADI BHAYANKARAM KALKI THONDANUR (P.B.K.T.)

TRUST was initiated sometime in the 1980’s by late Sri M.T.Ramaswami Iyengar,

Prof. of Mathematics, and later was registered. The Trust to this day conducts

bus trips to Thondanur from Bangalore on Nambinarayana Rathothsavam day and the

devotees are furnished with breakfast, coffee/tea, mid-day meals, evening

coffee/tea, and some snacks. Pilgrims from Mysore, Mandya and other places also

visit this place on this day. In the last few years more than 3000 people have

taken advantage of this opportunity.

The Trust has now taken up the next project of building COTTAGES to allow

pilgrims coming from out of town to stay for a few days in Thondanur and enjoy

the temples and the ambience. For this The Trust has acquired land, with great

difficulty, which is registered in the name of The Trust. A basic plan for the

cottage has been approved. The Trust has interest in constructing about 25

cottages at an estimated cost of Rs.3 lakhs per cottage. Work has not started

for want of FUNDS.

Along with this, the Trust is trying to augment the " DAILY POOJA SUPPORT

PROGRAMME " . Towards this, the Trust is collecting Rs. 1000/- minimum from

interested devotees and individuals and keeping this “principal” in fixed

deposits. The annual interest earned will be used for the purpose of supporting

pooja on the day in the name selected by the donor, as an ongoing programme

every year. Funds are being received for this. The goal is to support DAILY

POOJA to be done in a befitting manner on all the 365 days of the year.

The Trust is trying to organize a good new “THERU” (chariot for God) as the

existing one is very very old and dilapidated. For this project the resident of

Thondanur consisting majority of local farmers are the real support and they are

collecting funds for the same. THE Theru has been made in which was the one in

which both the temple deities had the FIRST Theru programme in year 2004. Quite

a lot of work still to be done to complete this work.

The Trust requests all devotees, well wishers and philanthropists to donate

generously for COTTAGE, DAILY POOJA and/or THERU program to achieve the goal of

serving the devotees.

The funds in Foreign Currency cannot be received by The Trust, and hence we

request that alternate arrangements be made to send the same in Indian Rupees.

THE P.B.K.T. TRUST’S GOAL IS " TO SERVE " AS SAID BY SRI KULASHEKARA ALWAR "

BRITHYASYA BRITHYA " (Mukandamala-27)

avabratha snAnam is being practiced during all thIrthavAri utsavams.

But, in thondanUr, I have heard that one must not have the snAnam

along with perumAL. The reason being, the water has been blessed with

the holy feet of emperumAnAr and mudaliyAndAn and we being the

followers of his feet should only gather the water(without our feet on

it) and sprinkle over our head and also drink it. Unfortunately I have

seen many people taking bath and diving in the thondanUr lake, which

is incorrect. I have been advised so by few great swamys and scholars

and hence am sharing this information with you all.

*****Please do not take bath in thondanUr lake nor dare to dip your

feet. If you are blessed to visit the lake, please take the water back

home for drinking*****
