The divine beauty of this Divya Desam, like any other Divya Desam, cannot be comprehended by just the words. One has to visit this place to get the divine anubhavam. This Divya Desam is considered as one of the most important ones in our sampradayam. Azhwars and Acharyas have enjoyed the beauty of this Perumal. This Divya Desam is 30 minutes away from Madurai town in the state of Tamilnadu. Kallazhagar has some strong link with Thirukkurungudi. Azhagar had to be protected. Hence, He was taken to Thirukkurungudi. For sometime, Thirukkurungudi Nambi and ThirumalirumchOlai Azhagar were together. Azhagar Thirunakshatram during the tamil month of Adi was celebrated in Thirukkurungudi itself. During this festival, Azhagar veedhi purappAdu happened. There was an old lady who was a devotee of Azhagar. She had cooked pongal and another dish (it is called as “kAttrOttikAi kariyamudhu” – adiyen does not know how to translate in English). It is believed that Azhagar stopped in front of her house and accepted this food. Even today, in the day of Adi UthrAdam – when Azhagar ThiruthEr utsavam happens, pongal and and the vegetable dish are prepared and offered to Him in Thirukkurungudi temple along with recitation of His
