SrI:Dear SrI Malolan Narayanan :I am happy to respond to your question .According to Dharma SaastrAs , the optimal age for Brahmin boys to undergo the UpanayanaSamskAram is 8 ( GarbhAshtamam) . It is 11 forKshathriyAs and 12 for VaisyAs . Please refer to the 40th e-book in the Ahobilavalliseries for additional details on Upanayanam and itspurpose and why there has been a stipulation to observe this samskAram at age 8 for Brahminchildren :http://www.ahobilavalli.org The title of this e-book is " Homa , Havis , Yaj~naa and Hindu SamskArAs ".It is better to have upanayanam later than not to have it at all.Without the Upanayanam , one's eligibility for any Vaidhika Kaaryam is nil . For a brahmin boy, this age is 16. Also, it says that after 16 years of age, he has no rights on Savitri.I know that there is the Gayatri (for the sun god - Savita?). So, if one has upanaynam after the age of 16, is he allowed to chant Gayatri and do the other japams.
