Dear sri vaishNava perunthagaiyeer,

Here is one of the rarely heard krithis on the concert [kutchery] platforms. Of course for a bit more aged connoisseurs of music - I mean here moderately aged – around 50 and 60, for them this krithi was a familiar one, since the great Dr. M.L.Vasantha kumari rendered this krithi frequently in her concerts.

raagam: gunDakriya

15 maayaa maaLava gowLa janyam

Aa: S R1 M1 P N3 S

Av: S N3 P D1 P M1 G3 R1 S

thaaLam: aadhi

Composer: Thyaagaraaja

Language: Telugu

pallavi

inthanuchu varNimpa tharamaa bramhEndhraadhulakaina -- intha

meaning: Is it possible to quantify even for brahma, Indhra et al?

anupallavi

kanthu ni ganna maa chakkani kalyaaNa raama chandhra nee sogasu - intha

meaning: The charm of our lovely kalyaaNa Raama chandhra, you, oh, the very Father of Manmatha, the cupid.

meaning: His eyes are having cool glances. The face of Sri Raama chandhra excels even moon in its features (kaLalu). His speech is slow and composed. Thus, all His features, which stand for His natural auspicious qualities are granting us asylum – that 'abhayam' – is it ---

charaNam 2

ennO jEsi varamulandhi moordhanyulu

ainavaari madhambula raajanya

laghuvuna naaNachE paraakrama - intha

meaning: There were people, who did severe penance for pleasing other gods [anya dhEvathaas], and obtained several boons from them and thus exalted. You, oh raama, The mighty Lord, trampled down their pride and made them powerless.

charaNam 3

vaagees

aadhi surakOtlaku vEdha

aagama s

aasthramulaku ganagooDani

naagaraaja bhooshaNuDaina sree

thyaagaraaja sannutha needhu mahima - intha

meaning: Oh, raama, praised by [this] thyaagaraaja! Your glory is incomprehensible to even several demigods like Brahma, scriptures like Vedhaas, aagamams and even to Siva who has serpents as his ornaments.

Point: suddenly why this krithi crop up? The answer is - It is connected with seethaa kalyaaNam – or seethaa raama kalyaaNam – the marriage of seethaa with raama.
