Guest guest
Post 12 Dear sri vaishNava perunthagaiyeer, In previous posts we saw how the first 'vaaraNamaayiram' paasuram suits to 'raama'. Next paasuram is 'naaLai vadhuvai maNam enRu naaL ittu' – once the bow is broken by raama immediately the marriage did not take place on the spot. Though king janaka was ready and seethaa as well, raama was not ready to take on the marriage till his father consented and arrived at mithila. [That was said by seethaa to anasooya when anasooya asked the details of seethaa's marriage – seen earlier in my article on 'raama wins']. dheeyamaanaam na thu thadhaa prathijagraaha raaghava: | avignaaya pithuschandham ayOdhyaa adhipathE: prabhO: || 2-118- 49 thadhaa = during that time dheeyamaanaam thu = [the girl] being offered raaghava: = the legatee of raghu race ayOdhyaa adhipathE: prabhO: = the lord and king of ayOdhyaa pithuschandham = the mind of father avignaaya = not knowing na prathijagraaha = did not accept meaning: then raaghava, did not accept me straightaway without knowing the mind of his father and the king of ayOdhyaa. Further if you see in baala kaaNdam even after dhasaratha reached mithila, the marriage did not take place immediately on his arrival. King janaka says to king dhasaratha – his sambandhi – please initiate the marriage proceeding tomorrow – in lines of aaNdaaL's 'naaLai vadhuvai maNam enRu naaL ittu'- 1-69-12b-13b. nara + srEshTa = among men, best in first-born-linage [because you are born in first and foremost Ikshvaku dynasty, hence you are; nara + indhra = oh, Indra of Indra-like kings [on earth]; s vaH + prabhaathE = tomorrow, morning; yaj~nasya + anthE = of Vedic-ritual's, at end of [at the culmination]; rishi + saththamaiH [sammatham] = with Sages, best one's [conducted by, agreeable to for the time and date of marriage]; vivaaham + thvam = marriage, you; sam + varthayithum + arhasi = to clearly initiate [about the talks, celebrations reg. marriage,] apt of you. Meaning: Because you are born in first and foremost Ikshvaku dynasty, hence you are the Indra of Indra-like kings on earth... it will be apt of you to initiate the celebrations of marriage tomorrow, and the marriage after the culmination of the Vedic-ritual [in three or four days, and the date and time for the] marriage, that which is agreeable to the best sages [can be decided, and you can get it performed [on that date,] by those great sages alone... [1-69-12b, 13a] Point: when the proceedings are initiated thus [stated as above] then janaka announces the 2 vadhoos – seethaa to raama and oormiLaa to lakshmaNa, and then they finalized the date as given below – again as per vaalmeeki – janaka is saying to vasishTa – conveyed thru the guru vasishTa to the king dhasaratha – how the purOhithar reads the nichayathaartha lagna pathrikai these days on behalf of both sides of vadhoo and varan – [again a point is to be noted here is - the protocols are how nicely and subtly carried out] 1-71- 21b-22a. veerya + sulkaam = bravery's, bounty; mama + suthaam + seethaam = my, daughter, Seethaa; sura + sutha + upamaam = divine Providence's, daughter, in simile; dhvitheeyaam + oormiLaam + cha + Eva = second one, Urmila, also thus; thriH + vadhaami = thrice, I reiterate; na + sam sayaH = no, doubt; munipungava = oh, eminent-saint; thE + vadhvou + dhadhaami = those, brides, I am bestowing; parama + preethaH = highly, gladdened. Meaning: My daughter Seethaa is the bounty for bravery and in simile she is the daughter of the divine Providence, and thus the second one oormiLaa too... oh, eminent-saint, undoubtedly I reiterate thrice while I bestow those brides, highly gladdened as I am. [1-71-21b, 22a] Point: Again a date was fixed – aaNdaaL's "naaL ittu" - and then only the marriage took place – in lines of vaalmeeki again – 1-71-24. mahaabaahO = oh, great dextrous Dasharatha; adhya + maghaa + hi = today, [ruling star is] Magha, isn't it; prabhO = oh, lord; thritheeyE + dhivasE = on third, day; phalgunyaam = in Phalguni [when star Phalguni comes]; thasmin + uththarE = in that, later part [uttara phalguNi]; raajan = oh, king; vaivaahikam + kuru = wedding, you make happen; raama + lakshmaNayOH = for Rama, Lakshmana; sukha + udhayam + arthE = for wellbeing, invoking, for purpose of [wellbeing is the only ensuing factor]; dhaanam + kaaryam = bounties, doable [be accorded generously.] " Oh, great dextrous Dasharatha, the star ruling today is magha, isn't it... oh, lord, on the third from now, say day after tomorrow, when the star phaalguNi comes, in its later part, namely uttara phalugNi, you may make happen this wedding, and the bounties [like go bhuu tila hiraNya aadi i.e., 'cows, lands, grains, gold etc] that ensue the wellbeing of Rama and Lakshmana, may be accorded [to the eligible,] generously... [1-71-24] So again aaNdaaL's 'naaLai vadhuvai maNam enRu naaL ittu' – is all so close to vaalmeeki's descriptions of seethaa kalyaaNam.
