Guest guest
The PeriyAzvAr Thirumozhi PeriAzvAr comes to be known as PeriyAzvAr because of His overwhelming concern for EmpeurmAn's Welfare. Sri MAmunikAL in his upadesa RethinamAlai attributes this name to the extreme concern- pongum parivu- for EmperumAn. This lifeline of extreme concern runs right from ThiruppallaNDu through PeriyAzvAr Thirumozhi. The concern for welfare naturally combines into YasodhAs role for PeriyAzvAr and he cherishes and relishes sri krshNAs pranks right from birth to each stage of growth of the divine child. This is termed as ' piLLaith thamizh ' in tamil literature. Sri PeriyAzvAr's experience does not just confine with piLLaith thamizh, but the relationship with ANDAL being her foster father and the separation from her at a later stage makes him very philosophical. The later stages of Sri KrshNA's life of being charioteer for the pANdAVAs, the demolition of asuras are all embedded in the pAsuram-s on divya desam-s namely ThirumAlirumsOlai, Thiruvarangam, ThriukOshtiyUr and Thirumalai are to be studied to be enjoyed and learnt. The SrivaishNavic tenets are poured in these pasuram-s and are a treat to understand and grasp. The import of this of course is simple to observe but difficult to follow. Glimpses of Sri PeriyAzvAr's devotion towards Sri Rama can be seen in the Thirumozhi neRindha karumkuzhal mAdavAr nin adiyEan viNNapam where Sri RamAyanam is given to us in a platter as a simple capsule, a sweet coated one containing sugar and honey. The poetic prowess of Sri PeriyAzvAr can be observed from his several verses of piLLaith thamizh one of which contian andhAdhi also. His down to earth examples are excellent and a must prescripiton for connoisseurs of tamil, literature and devotion. The fact that PeriyAzvAr is associated with Sri KrshNA and His pranks is known but the greatness of The thirumozhi lies not only in this but also in his unique thoughts of our SrivaishNavic faith and great thinking. Sri PiLLai lOKachAryAR in SrivachabhUshaNam brings this fact to the fore, and places him in a high pedestal in the context of mangaLA sAsanam and Sri MAmunikaL therefore declares ThiruppallANDu as singular work of devotion 'vuNDOA ThirupallANDukku oppadhOAr kalai thAn..' It would be sacrilege to even think of covering The greatness of the work in a few write ups. It would be injustice not just to the AZvAr but to the commentators as well. Let us try to mutually exchange few of his ideas among ourselves in the days to come dasan vanamamalai padmanabhan
