Dear sri vaishNava perunthagaiyeer,

 

In that kEttadhanaal vandha kaadhal – after addressing [about the qualities and beauty of] the person – there should be some message is it not? – in either seeking something or conveying something. That is being done in 2nd line of the 1st slokam of rukmiNee's love letter. Just to recollect the slokam and it's meaning once again -

 

sruthvaa guNaan bhuvana sundhara sruNvathaam thE

nirvisya karNa vivarair harathO~anga thaapam |

roopam dhrusaam dhrusimathaam akhila arthha laabham

thvayi achyutha aavisathi chiththam apathrapam mE || 10-52-37

Srimath BhAgavatham: Canto X

 

meaning: Hearing about Thy virtues, which entering into the hearer's heart through the ear, generates bliss in the person's whole being, and hearing also about the beauty of Thy form, which fulfills the highest expectations of one's sense of sight, My mind, Oh AchyuthA, has entered into Thee, overcoming all feeling of bashfulness " .

 

So what she conveys here is – hearing about your qualities and beauty, my mind is fixed upon you – so - is it one-sided love? No, sirs, it is both sided – for we have already seen krishNa also saying 'I am not getting sleep in night since I heard about rukmiNi'. So 'kettadhanaalaayE' – just on hearing - both the would be bride and groom sides loved each other.

 

Or is it that one called the 'poorva janma bhandham' 'eRRaikkum Ezh Ezh piRavikkum paRRu' – that continuing relationship – yes it is. That is what maaraayaNa theertha says – as below.

 

Whereas in case of seethaa – no love or any such thing – till the condition of breaking the bow is carried out. Or perhaps vaalmeeki has kept out those aspects. But for aaNdaaL, kEttadhanaal kaadhal vandhathu, love came – confirmation also came by way of accepting that flower worn first by the young girl, about which father said NO and warned the girl not to do that.

 

Now let us see how NaaraayaNa Theertha NT is dealing this – rukmiNee conveying something to krishNa – for we have already seen her addressing – a lengthy one.

 

nidhaaya hrudhi gOvindham rukmiNee rukma bhooshithaa

mana: sambOdhya gOvindhE samaadhaaya idham aaha cha |

 

meaning: rukmiNee, that person decorated with gold, fixing the mind on gOvindhan called the mind and comforted it saying following -

 

rErE chEdha: sruNu vimala hrudh puNdareeka antharasthE

yasmin maayaa vilasitha jagathkODayah sandhi boomnee |

gOpaalam tham bhaja nigama vidhyaa vilaasa anupaalam

boopaalam tham parihara punar janma bhandha Eka moolam ||

 

meaning: hey destroyer [addressing the mind] – listen, you carry him in the inside the blemish-less clean lotus heart, and stay with him, be comforted for you have everlasting connection with the king gopaala, who can only be known by studying the vedhaas, who by his trick lifted the earth on his horn [in his varaaha episode] .

 

[may be my translation is poor – here is the word by word – so that you can combine to make better sense].

 

rE- hey

chEdha: - cutter or destroyer [calling the mind as cutter ]

sruNu – listen

vimala hrudh – clean heart

puNdareeka – lotus

anthara: sthE – staying inside

yasmin- whose

vilasitha maayaa – shining tricks

jagath kODaya – arched or curved world

sandhi – conjoining

bhoomnee- earth

tham bhaja gOpaalam – praise krishNa

nigama vidhyaa vilaasa – known by study of vEdhaas

anupaalam – protector

boopaalam – protector of earth or king

tham parihara – carry him or catch him

punar janma bhandha – in the new birth or repeated births

eka moolam – single root

 

By this rukmiNee indicates how deeply she has attached herself to krishNa by just listening about him – kEttadhaal – NT has also given a krithi in raagam saavEri as a continuation of this slokam as to show she is attached to krishNa in mind

- rErE maanasa gOpaalam

- this krithi is quite long having pallavi, anupallavi, and 6 charaNams

 

I will just give it without explanations or meaning in next post. It is in such a chaste and simple Sanskrit – even without meanings also you can understand the krithi, and for those who has familiarity with krishNa sthOthrams no need for a detailed commentary]

 

Thus NT says

ithi nischithya saa baishmee gOvindha avaapthayE hrudhi

aaraadhayanthee tham krishNam prEma bhakthyEam aaha cha||

 

meaning: Thus concluding to self that bahishmee – rukmiNee - daughter of bheeshmaka was doing aaraadhanam – worshipped or did adoration in her heart to krishNa in prEma bhakthi.

– devotion of love – or simply bhakthi in 'naayaka naayikaa bhaavam', which as we know aaNdaal also did.
