Dear sri vaishNava perunthagaiyeer,

 

'When a girl falls in love, she gets enormous courage' people say, and 'she is ready to do some great thing or forsake anything just for love's sake'.

 

May be madal oordhal in tamil literature is a grand example for this 'guts' of the lady in love. See here rukmiNee gets that enormous courage

– not only to write that first love letter, which became a precedence for many to follow later

– but even to suggest ways and means of 'winning' her self

– the procedural aspects spelt very clearly in her love letter

 

all because she heard about krishNa – that 'kEttadhaal vandha kaadhal – adhanaal vandha dhairyam'. Already we saw that courage of aaNdaaL to proclaim 'maanidavarkku enRu pEchchup padil vaazhagillEn' in which love eventually she won finally.

 

Just recall another incident in mahaa bhaaratham – ambaa claiming her love when she was abducted by bheeshma for his brother's sake – her dhairyam on account of love – in a very keen adverse situation. [And finally that girl became a resource to paaNdavaas on how to kill bheeshma – otherwise with all their bravery they could not even think of, even though krishNa is also there to help].

 

See here rukmiNee – speaking on the ways and means – bhaagavatha slOkam -

svObhaavini thvam ajitha udhvahanE vidharbhaan

gupthah samEthya pruthanaapathibhih pareethah |

nirmathhya chaidhya magadhEndhra balam prasahya

maam raakshasEna vidhhinaa udhvaha veerya sulkaam || 10-52-41

 

meaning: O unconquerable one, tomorrow when my marriage ceremony is about to begin, You should arrive unseen in Vidarbha and surround Yourself with the leaders of Your army. Then crush the forces of chaidhya [country named ChEdhi so chaidhya] and magadhendra and marry me in the raaksasa style, winning me with your valour.

 

in another translation – the meaning is given as "The day before the marriage is taking place You must come to Vidharbha, o Invincible One, secretly, surrounded by Your officers to crush fighting the armed resistance of the kings of Caidya and Magadha and take me in marriage in the raakshasa-style as the reward for Your valor".

 

point:

1. see the 'timing' and the urgency in the love matter - "Tomorrow is the marriage ceremony to begin".

 

2. The letter is being sent today thru a braahmaNa,

– Who either has to walk all the way to krishNa's place

– Or take the chariot of the young princess rukmiNee herself

– When the braahmaNa goes in princess's chariot, it may lead to suspicion, 'why and where she is rushing' or who is this person going in princess' chariot etc

– That too when tomorrow is the marriage

– From rukmiNee's place, which is vidharbha – may be present day karnaataka.

– To dhwaaraka in another corner – western corner of the country bhaarath.

– No aeroplane like these days.

– Further more krishNa has to come in his chariot down to vidharbhaa from dhvaarakaa

– Again that much time needed for his travel down to kuNdinapuram capital of vidharbhaa

– Even assuming the brahmana is also traveling along with krishNa, then also a two way travel – that much time is required.

 

3. The word 'svObhaava' as per Monier Williams dictionary means 'tomorrow's state of affairs' – page 1106 col 1. This meaning also gives rise to a shade of inner meaning – that the marriage is not exactly tomorrow – but preparations towards that etc will all be done – during that time 'hey krishNa you can come and take me away'. So, she is sure that the marriage is exactly NOT tomorrow.

 

By the selection of this unique word, it is also indicated that the state of affairs of marriage may take a different route than planned by king and his team - like the abduction of rukmiNee.

 

In the second translation given above, there is room for a thinking that marriage is not slated for tomorrow, but it also indicates 'you must act fast enough for marriage is in the very near future' – 'may be a couple of days away'.

 

4. But what really happened – the brahmaNa started, next moment he was with krishNa. [these are not my words – but of sri krishNa prEmi swamigaL - in his bhaagavatham upanyaasam] Similarly when he took the message of krishNa and left – next moment he was with rukmiNee who is anxiously waiting.

 

5. These are all bhagavath sankalpam – that magic hand or wand of krishNa. Recall that "dhroupathikku pudavai surandhaanirE"- comment of Periya vaachaan piLLai – same magic wand.

 

6. just recall that janaka's words – 'seethaa will be offered as veerya sulkam'- similar scene – rukmiNee herself says she is a veerya sulkam to krishNa – reason - both raama and krishNa are kshathriyaas.

 

Since NaraayaNa theertha has not given any tharagam or slOkam on this bhaagavatha slOkam or previous one, I am proceeding further with next bhaagavatha slOkam.

 

antha:pura anthara chareem anihathya bhandhhoom

thvaam udhvahE kathham ithi pravadhaami upaayam |

poorvEdhyuh asthi mahathee kula dhEvi yaathraa

yasyaam bahir navavadhooh girijaam upEyaath || 10-52 -42

 

meaning: Since I will be staying within the inner chambers of the palace, You may wonder, " How can I carry you away without killing some of your relatives? " But I shall tell You a way: On the day before the marriage, there is a grand procession to honor the royal family's deity, and in this procession the new bride [viz. me] goes outside the city to visit the Goddess Girija. [and at that time you can carry away me is understood]

 

point: 1. see again the guts – the manO balam – the dhairyam – the eagerness to join the lover, she herself conveys the upaayam – plan – route - method - way - to take her away.

 

2. Aha, aha - what a wonderful love letter. Whenever I read this I am struck with wonder. What amount of guts the lady gets when she falls in love. So no wonder, the filmy fellows get the clue from bhaagavatham.

 

3. Ok, knowing that the lord krishNa is all capable – even as a child performed many wonders – he is sarva sakthan – fine – think of anyother – what happens to all these guts?

 

4. perhaps when you compare seethaa's marriage, with rukmiNee's, this is more thrilling. Hope bhagavathaas will agree with me.

 

5. Same with aaNdaal – that is also a low-key affair.

 

On this slOkam of bhaagavatham 10-52-42 naraayana theertha says

 

gowree sankara poojaartham yaathra mE nagaraath bahih|

yadhaa thathaa hi avasarO bhavathah madh parigrahE ||

 

meaning: I will come out of the city to do poojaa to gowree and sankara, at that time you catch me [and take me].

 

Thus when he takes rukmiNee what will happen to her – it is kshEmam to rukmiNee – is it not? So naarayana theertha says

– rumiNee writes this request to krishNa, 'kshEmam kuru gOpaala'

– a krithi in raagam 'mOhanam'.

That krithi we will see in next post.
