Guest guest
SrI: Dear Members : Some of you have asked the timing for the tying of the Charadu for the KaaradayAn Nonbu in USA and India . It is Meena SankramaNam time , when Panguni Maasam interfaces with Maasi Maasam .That is when the saradu is tied as Mangalya Soothram . In USA East Coast , It is March 13 , Thursday , 11.27 PM ; The time range is between 11,27 PM and 12.14 AM) , It is Friday , March 14 in India ( 8.40 AM to 9.09 AM) for tying the Saradu . Lakshmi " PoojA " , NaivEdhyam with special BhakshaNams are done before. Every house/region has its own BhakshaNams. I had asked Sriman Vaasu VaahdyAr Swamy , the Owner/Moderator of hte Vaideekam Group for some insights on this observance(Nonbu) . He has sent me a splendid response , which I want to share with you. PramANams are not always available . Yukthi Vaadham is allowed in such cases . Mainly SishtAchAram from the observances of the elders of the Family has to be an important item of reference . I always ask Sriman Vaasu VaadhyAr for clarifications on Vaidhika KarmAs although KaaradayAn Nonbu is not a Vaidhika KarmA or Vratham . Please join the Vaidhikam and benefit from Sriman Vaasu VaadhyAr's extensive experience and Scholarship . The response from Sriman Vaasu VadhyAr is appended below . V.Sadagopan C0-Moderator , Vaidheekam P.S : I will conclude with a prayer from one of the slOkams from Sri Lakshmi Sahasram : KanyE dhugdhOdanvatas-thAvakeenam manyE roopam MangaLam MangaLAnAm yath-sAvarNya-prAptha-bhadrA HaridhrA SoumangaLyam samvidhatthE VadhUnAm --12th slOkam ,MaangaLyAkhya SthaBakam , Sri Lakshmi Sahasram of ArasANippAlai VenkatAdhvari Kavi Her roopam is MangaLAnAm MangaLam ( Most auspicous among all auspicious roopams ). Dheerga SoumAngalyam is requested as a boon here from Her , who arose out of the Milky Ocean . She is addressed here as HaridhrA is the name of ManjaL ( Turmeric). One definition of HaridhrA is " Harim DhrAvayathi ithi HaridhrA " . One who melts the mind of Her Lord (DhrAvayathi) with Her charm and VaseekaraNa sakthi is the Lady saluted as HaridhrA . She makes the Lord's heart and mind melt so that He overlooks our sins and forgives us and accepts Her pleading on behalf of us , who have trespassed His Saasthrams . The prayer here is to gain dheerga Sumangalithvam and is an appropriate prayer to Her on KaaradayAn Nonbu day. We know that any thing comes under the name 'Nonbu' is 'Vradham' performed by ladies. (I hope that Vradham is not used for ladiesthe word Nonbu may be apt one for ladies, e.g. "Paavai Nonbu")The brief significance of this Nonbu is:Requesting sowbhagyam and sowmangalyam for a long term. The are requesting the Godess Sri Lakshmi (Piraatti) for this by fasting from early morning without taking even water, by uttering known slogas and stotras, they will wait for the Sankramanam (meeting point of the month Maasi and Panguni) just before the birth of Panguni maasam they will start finishing the nonbu by doing some Lakshmi pooja and they will offer the bhakshanams and other things specially prepared for it to Thaayar.Ladies are doing Nonbu or pooja twice in a year for the long life of their husbands . 1. At the 'Kanu day' next day to Pongal - they pray for the long life of all their brothers. 2. At the eve of the month of Masi, they pray for the long life of their husbands. There must be some strong or meaningful (astrological) background for using this specific period for this nonbu. (I try to do research on this before next nonbu.) But the verbal saying about this is :"Masi Kayiru Paasi padarum" means, the thread worn in the month of maasi will stay for long time. And hence the Upanayanam also will be done in the month maasi. Now my assumption of the meaning of the term "Kaaradaiyaan".Adaiyaan stands for 'husband' because "Ampadayaan" is one of the name for husband among the brahmins. "Kar" stands for "Protect". Placing the request "Protect (my)- husband " before the Godess Lakshmi, who can bless for Sowmaangalyam (Maangalya devadha). So, the term "Kar - Adaiyan" nonbu may be derived like this.Note:-I don't have any evidence for any of the thing mentioned here, everything is my own assumption using my common sense. dasan, nvs
Guest guest
It was interesting to read the meaning of 'KaaraDaiyan' from Shri Vasu Vadhiyar. Actually I thoughtit was so called because the 'KaaraDai' that was kept as 'NeivEdhyam';which was made out of Rice flour ,Jaggery and (kaaramaNi)Black-eyed Beans. The sloka that went with it was: 'urugaada veNNaiyum Or aDaiyum vaiththu un nOnbu nootREn, oru kaalum en kaNavan ennai vittu piryaadu errukka vENDum'! Here the word 'un' could denote Shri Lakshmi or Savithri,Legend says that it was she who observed this 'nOnbu'. In Karnataka the nOnbu is called 'Moondru DOsai paNDikai' They pile three 'dOsais' interspersed with Cocoanut 'poorNam'as 'neivEdhyam. I liked Vasu Vadiyars input and I have forwarded the same to my sisters and daughter! --- In Oppiliappan , " Dr. Sadagopan " <yennappan wrote: > > SrI: > > Dear Members : > > Some of you have asked the timing for the tying > of the Charadu for the KaaradayAn Nonbu > in USA and India . > > It is Meena SankramaNam time , when Panguni > Maasam interfaces with Maasi Maasam .That is > when the saradu is tied as Mangalya Soothram . > > In USA East Coast , It is March 13 , Thursday , 11.27 PM ; > The time range is between 11,27 PM and 12.14 AM) , > > It is Friday , March 14 in India ( 8.40 AM to 9.09 AM) for tying > the Saradu . > > Lakshmi " PoojA " , NaivEdhyam with special BhakshaNams > are done before. Guest guest
SrI: Daer Srimani : Many Thanks for sharing this information . V.Sadagopan - Mannie Gant Dr. Sadagopan Wednesday, March 05, 2008 1:22 AM RE: Kaaradayaan Nombhu Charadu Swamin, In Smartha tradition it is regards as Suwarna Gauri Vratham. It was this time, when Savithroi got back Sathyavaan alaive from Mruthyu. So, my mom ( and all other smuangaling in our tradition) make Kaar Adai (out of roasted rice powder) and offer with Vennai. To simulate the environment in jungle they make adais with Phalaasa leaves. Then, my mom chants Savithri Paatam and makes Puja to Ambaal. This version is in par with Savithri'; story. Vasu Vadhyar's version is relatively new. Next thing is that, all the women (except widows) do this puja and tie the thoram or chardu as a blessing of Ambaal or Savithri. Chanting Savithri paatam is an important part of this Vrutham. In Maharastra ( & other northern states) it is called as Vata Savithri Vrutham. Svatihri is a manifestation os none other than Thripura Sundari (Gayathri Vyakruthi Sandaya - Lalitha 1000). I hope this info helps Thx,Srimani.
