Guest guest
PRIDE AND PREJUDICE Haughtiness is not a virtue. Blowing ones own trumpet is not a sign of good character. Pride is not to be celebrated. Still our AzvAr-s appear to exalt this. The pride associated with Devotion to Lord and His devotees is welcome. This is the exception to the general rule. Challenges Thirumazhisaip pirAn 'nAraNanEa nE ennai anRi ilai' nAnmugan ThiruvandhAdhi 7. Though this is haughtiness, pride of being a SrivaishNavite is celebrated. Sri PeriyAzvAr realising this exception, celebrates as 'abhimAna thungan-Selvan' Thiru-p-pallANDu 11 and 'nalirndha sElan nayAchalan abhimAna thungan nADORum TheLIndha selvan' 4-4-8 of PeriyAzvAr Thirumozhi. How can haughtiness be commended. Sri MAmunikaL clears this doubt in a lucid manner in his inimitable style. Sri MAmunikAL commentary is exemplary in this context. naLirndha sElan is a very good quality.nAyAchalan is practising this. abhimAna thungan is pride being a devotee emanating from knowledge. nADoRum theLindha selvan- is this pride would never become the haughtiness in mundane sense.-this is sAthvEka ahankAram. The text is wonderful 1.naLirdha selan enbadhu guNam. 2. nayachalam enbadhu anushtAnam 3. abhimAna thungan -ivatRAl vandha serukku- gnAna kAryam engiRadhu. 4. nAdoRum theLindha- ich seRukkOdu oru nALum viBharEdham kalasAdhu engiRadhu. AbhimAnam is pride and thungan is Commendable. Commendable Pride.unalloyed pride. Going a step further, AzvAr declares himself as one toeing such line-Selvanaip pOlEa thirumAlEA nAnum vunakkup pazha adiyEan.. He is also proud to be called so. Thus, not just being proud Sri VishNU chithAn is prejudiced in favour of being so. SathvEka ahankAram Sri Selva Nambi of ThirukOshtiyUr was devoted to EmperumAn and SrivAshNavites which is hihgly eulogised by our PeriyAzvAr. SaThvika ahankAram is virtue and this pride is welcome and therefore prejudice towards this pride is appreciated and that is Pride and Prejudice from our PeriyAzvAr dasan' vanamamalai padmanabhan
