Dear sri vaishNava

perunthagaiyeer,

 

We saw in post 21, how dhasaratha

entered the palace of kaikEyee with what intention. When dhasaratha came to see

her, he also wanted to inform kaikEyee about raama's coronation with the idea

that since being a pet queen of him, she will be happy to receive the news

first, than raama's mother and senior queen kousalya.

 

adhya raama abhishhEkO vai prasidhdhha ithi

jajnivaan || 2-10-10

priyaarham priyam aakhyaathum vivEsa anthahpuram vasee |

 

meaning: king Dasaratha, who kept all activates

under his control, entered into the inner chambers to tell the good news of

Raama's coronation to KaikEyee who was a worthy woman to be told the good

news first (thinking or assuming that she has not yet heard the news).

 

Point: See

vaalmeeki's play with words. KaikEyee is a 'worthy woman' in dhasaratha's

opinion and hence he wanted to inform her first, than rama's mother kousalyaa,

the senior 'patta mahishi'. But, in what position he saw kaikEyee is --

 

sa vridhdhhah tharuNeem bhaaryaam praaNEbhyO~api

gareeyaseem || 2-10-23

apaapah paapa sankalpaam dhadharsha dharaNeethalE |

lathaam iva vinishkriththaam pathithaam dhEvathaam

iva || 2-10-24

kinnareem iva nirdhoothaam chyuthaam apsarasaam

yathaa |

maayaam iva paribhrashTaam hariNeem iva samyathaam

|| 2-10-25

 

meaning: That Dhasaratha, who was sinless, saw a youthful woman dearer

than his life, lying down on the floor with an intent to do sin. At that time,

she was looking like a

§

completely

uprooted creeper,

§

fallen

angel,

§

thrown

down Kinnara woman,

§

expelled

divine dancer - apsaras,

§

dropped

off 'illusion'

§

female

deer tied up in a net.

 

Points:

a. The

description of dhasaratha and kaikEyee here are lovely ones –

1. Dhasaratha

is sinless

2. dhasaratha

saw a youthful woman in kaikEyee, his 3rd wife – an old man marrying

a young woman – that itself is considered now as a sin – but said as sinless –

a contradiction by vaalmeeki?

3. No. In

those days kings used to marry any number of wives and girls even when they are

old.

4. As per the

dharmam prevailing then, it is not considered as a sin – because the lady gets

a royal protection even if the king dies immediately. So protection –

economically and socially – is the priority then.

 

5. He came

with the 'intention' as already covered in previous post - another sin? Or

sinless? Oh, no – he is sinless - for it is genuine – to enjoy sex with his

royal, loyal, wedded wife – let her be young or old – let the man be young or

old.

 

6. dhasaratha

has not informed the queen kousalya the no 1 in order among the three but came

to kaikEyee the no. 3. Again another sin on the part of dhasaratha?

7. No. For he

does not see any discrimination among the three – all are equal – and treated

by him as equals - so he is sinless.

 

8. dhasaratha

treats kaikEyee 'dearer' than life – thereby vaalmeeki indicates things to come

– yes – his life is going to be 'dearer' for him – in another meaning – it is

to cost him - by that person who is treated 'dearer' than life.

 

9. kaikEyee is

not receiving him with respect when he enters her palace but lying down. So

that itself is a sin – in the royal code of conduct - worthy of a punishment.

10. kaikEyee

now lying down with the intent to do a sin – a sin against his wish –

disobeying the husband itself is considered as a sin those days.

11. when dhasaratha

wants to crown raama, the senior, she wishes him to be away in forest – and

that is what she is going to ask - along with crowning of bharatha, the junior

– against the convention – so again a sin.

 

Oh, a great slokam.

 

b. In the second sargam of ayOdhyaa

kaaNdam chakravarthy dhasaratha says to other kings and deputies 'I am 1000s of years old' and 'I want to

retire from the king's post' –

 

praapya varsha sahasraaNi bahooni aayoomshi

jeevathah |

jeerNasya asya sareerasya vishraanthim

abhirOchayE || 2-2-8

 

meaning: " This body has been living for many

thousands of years. Hence I desire rest. "

 

But see here the description about

his third wife – she is a tharuNee – means a young woman – as per Monier

Williams - young, tender, juvenile, girl. So, such an old man dhasaratha is

having a very young wife in kaikEyee. And he wanted to share his happy moments

with her first, but finds her in condition as stated herein above.

 

See how 'kaamam' is full glow –

kaamam – means simply a desire or sex or both - each person's kaamam pulling in

a direction of its own.

 

Since the length puts a brake we

will continue points on same slokam in next post also.
