In Srivaishnava parlance the word nambi is reserved for one who is

replete with good qualities, guna. For this reason Chakrathazhwar at

Thirumoghur should be called Sudarshana nambi. It is said that this

figure of the Lord's mighty discus is chock-full with all the

attributes as prescribed in the agamas.

We are blessed by some truly magnificent Sudarshanas in various divya

deshas. The chakra roopi Janardanah at Srirangam, the exquisite

Sudarshana at Kanchi Varadaraja temple etc etc. In Kumbakonam there is

a temple to Chakrathazhwar , the justly famous Chakrapani temple. But

the Chakrathazhwar at Thirumoghur, the domain of the peerless

Kalameghaperumal and Mohanavalli thayar, is unique and one of a kind.

He graces us in a truly disc form with teeth at the edges. It appears

to be constantly rotating even when stationary. His two legs are far

apart like an Olympic triple jumper at the height of his leap. This

signifies His unconditional willingness to come to the devotees' aid.

He is everready to jump into the fray to defeat His bhaktas' foes.

Being the will power, sankalpa shakti of our Lord, He is aparajitha,

one who can never be vanquished.

He has three eyes and has flames, jwala , for hair. Being the

Hetiraja, king of weapons, He has 16 different weapons in His hands.

From the centre to the rim he is a disc. The most significant

attribute is that He is full of bija, seed, mantraksharas. The maha

Sudarshana mantra is one of the most potent mantras known. The fact

that this particular icon of Sudarshana has all the seed letters of

the mantra makes it a complete one, without any deficiency. Perhaps

that is why Thirumoghur Chakrathazhwar is renowned as a granter of

wishes, a maha vara prasadi, and thousands visit His shrine day in and

day out. In fact He is more famous than the main deity such is the

paradox of our Lord's grace. Lord Narasimha in a yogic posture with

four arms each with a discus in it is on the other side of the image.

Both Sudarshana and Narasimha are handsome and one finds it difficult

to tear one's eyes away from them.

When we reached Thirumoghur on the Sunday 3rd of Aug 2008

Chakrathazhwar was in a balalayam as renovation was being done to His

sanctum. By Chakrathazhwar's grace, a gold covering for the vimana is

to be undertaken. The treasurer of the Sri LakshmiNarasimha Aptan

Kainkarya Sabha ,Shri U.Ve. Gopala Bhatter B.Com has requested one and

all to help in whatever capacity they can. His address is 1/8 East

Mada Street, Thirumoohur, Madurai 625017. He can be contacted at 99423

26069. Off.phone 0452 2422692. He invites all bhaktas to visit

Thirumoghur and get the blessings of Kalameghaperumal and Mohanavalli

thayar and of course the ever gracious Sudarshana nambi.
