The Significance of ‘nArAyaNanAya’

---

SwAmi Desikan refers to statements of SvEtASvatara and other Upanishads which

eulogize the Lord as having various qualities of excellence:

“SvEtASvatarAdi-kaLil connapaDiyE, jIva-ISvarar-kaLuDaiya cEtanatvamum,

svAbhAvika-mAna bhEda-mum, jIvarkaLuDiya anyOnya-bhEda-mum, sarvarukkum ISvaran

oruvanE sakala-abhimata-hEtu-vAnamuDiyum, upAya-bhootan tAnE prApyanAnapaDiyum,

ithukkuc cErntha ubhaya-lingatvamum, ubhaya-vibhooti-yOgamum,

sarva-vidha-bandhutvamum itthirunAmatthilE samkshiptangkaL.â€

SvEtASvatara and similar Upanishads praise various aspects of the greatness of

the Lord. All these are contained, in a contractual form, in the name,

‘nArAyaNa’. SwAmi Desikan lists out these:

1) “jIva-ISvarar-kaLuDaiya cEtanatvam,â€:- Both the jIvas and the Lord are

sentient.

2) “svAbhAvika-mAna bhEdam†:- The essential nature of the jIvas is

different from that of the Lord.

3) “jIvarkaLuDiya anyOnya-bhEdamâ€:- The jIvas and the Lord are mutually

different.

4) “sarvarukkum ISvaran oruvanE sakala-abhimata-hEtu†:-- The Lord alone

grants all the benefits sought by all the jIvas.

5) “upAya-bhootan tAnE prApyanâ€:-- The Lord alone is the means for the jIvas

to attain mOksha and He Himself is the fruit enjoyed by them.

6) “ithukkuc cErntha ubhaya-lingatvamâ€:-- In keeping with this, He has two

aspects – a) He is devoid of all negative qualities; and b) He is the

repository of innumerable auspicious qualities.

7) “ubhaya-vibhooti-yOgamâ€:-- He is Lord of this world (leelA vibhooti) and

the Paramapada (the Nitya-vibhooti).

8) “sarva-vidh-bandhutvamâ€:-- He remains all types of relation to the jIvas.

“itthirunAmatthilE samkshiptangkaLâ€:--

All these nuances are contained in this name, ‘nArAyaNa’, in an abridged

form, says Swami Desikan.
