Respected devotees of almighty

We are continuing the discussions on curses from different sources raavaNa received. We saw seethaa's, brahmaa's. now we will take up vEdhavathee's curse. 3. VEDHAVATHI'S CURSE Next curse to raavaNa was given by vEdhavathee in krutha yugam. Though sreemadh raamaayaNam says seethaa [in threthaa yugam] was vEdhavathi in her earlier birth and actually seethaa is mahaa lakshmee. So vEdhavathee is also an amsam of mahaa lakshmee or lakshmee herself. Vedhavathi was the daughter of sage Kusadhvaja. She was doing thapas to get supreme lord NaaraayaNa as her husband, as desired by her father and sage kusadhvaja. RaavaNa, when he roamed over himaalayaas, saw her, and also wanted to seduce her. And when she was adamant in disobeying to his wishes, he abused her. Vedavati, in a rage, cursed him that in spite of all his wealth, power and strength, he would be defeated and killed by a man, who

would be none other than Lord NaaraayaNa. On this vEdhavathee's story is told in two different areas – raamaayaNam. thirumala mahaathmyam. Let us see first sreemadh raamaayaNam – That raavaNa himself remembers vEdhavathee has been born as seethaa now, is as per sreemadh raamaayaNam – SapthO~aham vEdhavathyaa cha yadhaa saa dharshithaa puraa || 6-60-10saa iyam seethaa mahaa bhaagaa jaathaa janaka nandhinee | meaning: raavaNa to himself while lamenting on his defeat for the first time in the fight with raama, "Further, I was formerly cursed by vEdhavathi when she was humiliated by me. The same vEdhavathi is born as the highly fortunate Seethaa the daughter of Janaka." Apart from this, sreemadh raamaayaNam, uththara kaaNdam, sargam 17 says – sage agasthya tells the story of raavaNa in detail to raama in uththara kaaNdam -- – raavaNa,

during a rounding in himaalayaas, himavadh vanam aasaadhya parichakraama raavaNa; [7-17-2] when he saw a beautiful lady vEdhavathee doing thapas, he asked, being 'kaama mohitha' – lusty on seeing such a beautiful lady -- who and why and all that for doing thapas in himaalayaas alone - kaama mOha pareethaathmaa paprachchha prahasanniva [7-17-3] she replied – kusadhvaja is my father - kusadhvajO naama pithaa brahmarishi [7-17-8] my father wanted vishNu only as his son in law – means her husband -- pithuh thu mama jamaathaa vishNuh kila surEswarah [7-17-12] except naaraayaNa, the greatest among males - no body is my husband --naaraayaNo mama pathih na thu anyah purushOththamaath [7-17-18] when raavaNa tried to force her she cursed him –saying -- I will take birth again to kill you, oh raavaNa [– and she entered fire

and got burnt]. thasmaath thava vadhaartham hi samuthpathsyE hi aham punah [7-17- 32] this vEdhavathee further said, 'while I am being born I will be an 'anayOnijaa' – not being born in a womb. She further says to raavaNa, "also as daughter of a dharmaathmaa and a saadhu" [in janaka eventually]--- thasmaath thu ayOnijaa saadhvee bhavEyam dharmiNah suthaa [7-17- 34] that vEdhavathee is the daughter of janaka, oh lord raama – [these are stories being told to raama by agasthya in the uththara kaaNdam] saa Eshaa janaka raajasya prasoothaa thanayaa prabhO [7-17- 40] this lady had name as vEdhavathee in krutha yugam - Esha vEdhavathee naama poorvam aaseeth kruthE yugE [7-17- 43] In thrEthaa yugam to kill that raakashasa raavaNa, she only was born in mithila clan – as daughter of mahaathmaa janaka and her name is seethaa in and as a

human thrEthaa yugam anupraapya vadhaarthE thasya rakshasah uthpannaa maithila kulE janakasya mahaathmana: seethaa uthpannaa thu seethaa ithi maanushaih punah uchyathE [7-17 - 44] We will continue with more on vEdhavathee from other sources in next post and on raavaNa's curses.

With due respects to allthe devotees of almighty.
