In earlier posts we saw the curses given by seethaa, vEdhavathee, brahmaa to raavaNa. We will now continue with few more.

 

NANDHI - SIVAN'S ASSISTANT'S CURSE:

Once RaavaNa went in pushpaka vimaanam to 'sara vanam' – ['naaNal pul kaadu pOla vaLarndhadhanaal adhu sara vanam' – since the 'sara' type grass have grown like a forest, it is sara vanam]. This vanam was on mount kailaasam, which was shining like gold [remember murugan, son of siva, was born here and also gold which was siva's rEthas – bindhu – semen was dropped in this sara vanam by agni who could not bear the heat of the siva rEthas. This was dropped in 6 parts and then all 6 parts brought into 1 figure - hence aarumukham - 6 faced].

After traveling a bit, raavaNa's plane the 'pushpakam' did not move. RaavaNa got a doubt why the plane [pushpaka] is not moving. Maareecha who was accompanying raavaNa at that time, said to raavaNa, 'without reason this pushpaka plane will not stop'. Meanwhile siva's main bodyguard, vehicle [vaahanam] and attendant Nandikeswara came there and told raavaNa, 'you go back to your place and you cannot go further because siva is playing with paarvathi here in this sara vanam'.

This story and reference is available in sreemadh raamaayaNam uththara kaaNdam wherein sage agasthya is explaining about raavaNa to sree raama.

 

Nandhi told raavaNa --

nivarthasya dhasagreeva sailE kreedathi sankarah | 7-16-10

 

In his anger RaavaNa abused siva as well nandhi, saying -

 

kah~ ayam sankara ithi ukthvaa saila moolam upaagathah| 7-16-12

 

and RaavaNa descended and entered that place on the hill. On seeing nandhi, [tham dhrushtvaa] raavaNa in his fit of anger, for having stopped him, treated nandhi with disrespect saying - who is this monkey – [avagnaaya means showing disrespect]

 

tham dhrushtvaa vaanara mukham avagnaaya sa raakshasah | 7-16- 14

 

Nandi in turn cursed raavaNa, 'since you disrespected me as monkey, monkeys would destroy you, oh RaavaNa, your clan including your sons, ministers, kingdom, etc, with nails and their teeth as weapons'.

yasmaadh vaanara roopam maam avagnaaya dhasa aanana | 7-16-16

 

uthpathsyanthi vadhharthham hi kulasya thava vaanaraah |

nakha dhamshtra aayudhhaah kroora manah sampaatharamhasa | 7-16-17b18a

 

 

This curse of nandhi came true when Sree Hanumaan visited Lanka as sree Raama's messenger. Hanuman destroyed asOkha vanam first and then set Lanka on fire. That was the first step. Later, when Raama reached Lanka with Sugreeva's army of monkeys, these monkeys killed many raakshasaas and a major part of Ravana's kingdom was destroyed, with their nails and teeth only as weapons. So the lesson to be learnt for us, here, from this story, is 'do not show disrespect to any one unnecessarily for they may cause serious impacts later'.
