Guest guest
Post 4 Dear sri vaishNava perunthagaiyeer, We completed the pallavi and anupallavi of krithi lakshaNamulu gala. Now, continuing with charaNam – first a repeat of charaNam – for any number of times the charaNams are thought of – it goes off the mind – yes – pun intended – not only on the krithi's charaNam, but his feet, the lord's lotus feet, the raama charaNam, the raama charaNa smaraNam – for we are no where near to hanumaan to be constantly thinking of the supreme lord raama. Attempting to keep the thought on the lotus feet of the lord - attempted to do that many number of times – then also the thoughts go off to elsewhere – so a repeated attempt is necessary for all of us – hence a repeat of charaNam – of the krithi here with meaning - lakshaNa lakshyamu gala sruthulaku prathyakshambounaTa aksharasthulaina bhajana parulakE antharanguDaunaTa sishabaDi sabhanu meppincu bhaktha rakshakuDaunaTa saakshiyai velayu thyaagaraaja pakshakuDaunaTa muppadhi reNDu [lakshaNamulu] meaning of charaNam: It is said that – He shall be directly perceivable to those well-versed in vEdhaas or sruthi, who know definitions and aim (of mahaa vaakyams); He dwells in heart of devotees, and shall be the protector of those devotees who, being erudite bring fame to the assembly; He shall be perceivable in oneself only to those who are dedicated to chanting names being established in the imperishable brahman; He shall be always taking the side of this thyaagaraaja. Come, let us perform circumambulation of lord sree raama - one who shines as a mere witness and endowed with the thirty-two auspicious body marks (characteristics). Now sreemadh raamaayaNam: yajur vEdha vineethah cha vEdhavidhbhih supoojithah | dhanurvEdhE cha vEdhE cha vEdha angEshu cha nishThithah || 5-35-14 meaning: hanumaan says to seethaa, " He got trained in Yajur vEdham, [the sacrificial vEdham]. He is highly honoured by those who are wellversed in vEdhams. He is skilled in DhanurvEdham, the science of archery, other vEdhams and the six limbs* of vedhaangam. " Just for information what are the 6 limbs of vEdhangam are: Siksha, the science of proper articulaton and pronunciation Chandas, the metre Vyakarana, the grammar Nirukta, the explanation of difficult Vedic words Jyotisha, the astronomy or rather the Vedic Calendar. Kalpa, the ceremonial represented by a large number of Sura works. [Taken from valmikiramayan.net website]. Point: What is sruthi lakshyam – or aim of vEdhaas – to show him or show ways to identify him and help those who want to realize him – to that end, first he, that raama, must give that vEdham, then only he can act to perceive it as though he does not know it, and then show how he can be perceived as such by others. May be to prove that, hanumaan says 'raama knows yajur vEdham. Those who know Vedham do honour raama'and that is what ST also says lakshyamu gala sruthulaku prathyakshambounaTa – he is perceivable to all those who know sruthi – the vEdham, aksharasthulaina bhajana parulakE antharanguDaunaTa - raama dwells in hearts of those since he being honoured by those who know sruthi, and in turn he also protects them, ensure fame for them etc. Towards the end of charaNam ST says – raama is 'saakshiyai velayu' –yes – SVSN also has a naama saakshiNe nama – naamas 15, 517. also SVSN has naamams like aksharaaya nama, sathE nama, akshara sathE nama, asathE nama, asath ksharaaya nama: all giving descriptions and meanings to the lord's attributes, which are nothing but chanting his names by his devotees – bhajana parulakE of ST. Just before concluding ST says raama takes his side always who has 32 lakshaNamulu gala – join the charanam and pallavi - which is the style while singing – that 32 lakshaNams hanumaan takes up elaborately while describing or answering her question, to seethaa – because she asked for the description - vipulaamsO mahaabaahu: kambugreeva: subha aanana goodajathru: su thaamra akshO raamO dhEvi janai: srutha: || 5-35-15 Meaning: DhEvi! raama has raised shoulders, long arms, neck looking like a conch, beautiful face, shoulder bones covered with muscles and has red eyes as described by people. dhundhubhi svana nirgOsha: snigdha varNa: prathaapavaan sama samavibhaktha anga: varNam syaamam samaasritha: || 5-35-16 meaning: Raama has a voice like a dhundhubhi, [a sound emanating from a drum – majestic sound – such a masculine voice] has colour like flowing water, is famous, is of correct height with proportionate limbs and is dark in colour. thri valeemaan thrayee anatha: chathu: vyanga: thri seershavaan! chathu: kala: chathu: lEkha: chathu: kishku: chathu: sama: || 5- 35-18 thri valeeman - with 3 folds (3 flods each in the stomach and neck) thrayee anatha: - with 3 depressions (breast, nipple, foot) chathu vyanga: - with tapered 4 features (neck, male organ, back, knee) thri seershavaan - with 3 circles in His hair on the head chathu: kala: - with 4 lines on the bottom half of thumb chathu lEkha: - with 4 lines on His forehead chathu kishku: - 4 cubits height ie. 8 feet tall chathu sama: - with similarity in 4 features (hands, knees, thighs, cheeks) meaning: raama has 3 folds, 3 depressions, 4 tapered features, 3 circles in his head, 4 lines on thumb and forehead, 4 cubits viz.8 feet tall and similar in 4 features. chathurdhasa sama dhvandhva: chathur dhamshtra: chathurgathi: | mahOshtahanu nasascha pancha snigdha: ashta amsavaan || 5-35-19. chathurdhasa sama dhvandhva: - similarity in 14 pairs of features (eyebrows, nostrils, eyes, ears, lips, nipples, elbows, wrists, waist, hands, legs, buttocks, testicles, knees) chathur dhamshtra: - with 4 incisors [teeth] chathur gathi: - with a walk like 4 animals (lion, tiger, elephant, bull) mahaa Oshta: hanu nasa: cha - with thick lovely lips, cheeks and nose pancha snigdha - shining 5 features (hair, eyes, teeth, skin, sole of feet) ashta amsavaan - with 8 long features (body, hands, legs, fingers, nose, eyes, male organ, buttocks) meaning: raama has similarity in 14 pairs of features, 4 incisors, walks like 4 animals [viz. bull, lion, tiger, and elephant], thick lovely lips, cheeks and nose, shining in 5 features and long in 8 features. Point 1: what these 14 similar pairs are? To answer that – the 14 pairs are Eye brows – right and left – like a mirror imageNostrils - right and left – like a mirror imageEyes - right and left – like a mirror imageEars - right and left – like a mirror imageLips – top and bottom - like a mirror imageNipples - right and left – like a mirror imageElbows - right and left – like a mirror imageTesticles - right and left – like a mirror imageHips - right and left – like a mirror imageArms - right and left – like a mirror imageLegs - right and left – like a mirror imageRaising in buttocks- right and left – like a mirror imageWrists - right and left – like a mirror imageAnkles - right and left – like a mirror image The 5 shiny features or parts of body are Hair – black shiny hairEyes – white and black shinyTeeth – white shinySkin – blue or dark green shinyInside of feet – uLLankaal – lotus like pink The 8 long parts of body are BackboneBody as a wholeArmsLegs FingersNoseEyes Genital Oh, what a description – such a perfection only the lord can have – human beings out of question. That is why when raavaNa sees raama for the first time he was awe stuck with the captivating beauty of raama. Just enjoy the krithi and raama roopam with 32 lakshaNams – perhaps if you count you may get more only – I think - for hanumaan has given more Bhaagavathaas can say how it is – in my guess – perhaps it can be 3 folds + 3 depressions + 4 tapered features, + 3 circles in his head + 4 lines on thumb and forehead, 1 height [of 4 cubits viz.8 feet tall] - totalling 18 and 14 pairs of right and left similar parts make 32 lakshNams. With this I conclude this krithi description – of course I can add few more by giving ref. to Swamy desikan saying 'sabari moksha saakshee bhootha' for that saakshee of ST, bhagavatham – maarkandeya seeing the whole galaxy in his stomach etc, but the length and your patience will be tested. So I stop here. Thank you all Dhasan Vasudevan MG
