Guest guest
SrI: Dear SrI Sivaraman : Thanks very much for the SanthAna Manjari Krithi of SrI Dikshithar . It was delightful to hear its rendering by Dr. TNS Its MeLa Raagam , Sucharitra reminded me of a Krithi composed by my sister , VidvAmsini Padma VeerarAghavan in that 67th MeLa Raagam as one of the 72 MeLa Raaga Krithis on Oppiliappan , our Kula Dhaivam . This is how the Sucharitra Krithi in Tamil goes : Pallavi Geethayin NaathanE Gothai MaNavALaa Keerthi mEvum Thiru BhU dEvi ThiruvALaa ( Meaning) : Oh Master of Geethai ! Oh Dear consort of Gothai ! Oh Lord of SrI BhUmi Devi of enduring Fame ! Anupallavi adutthAtkkoNDAi adiyEnai aarukkum kidaikaa ariya bhAgyatthai( Geetayin) (Meaning): You intervened and made adiyEn Your servant. You blessed adiyEn thus with the rarest of bhAgyam that is not easiest to gain by others . The subtelty of the meaning "adutthu AatkoNDAi" in comparison with "Tadutthu AatkkoNDAi" has to be relished . CharaNam ThiruvONa ThiruvizhAvil ThiruviNNagaril naRumthuzhAi MaNimArbhan dhivya Sucharitan arumperum nidhiyAi AanandhasOthiyAi Thiru BhUdEviudan tihazhnthu ilangida( Geetayin) (Meaning): At ThiruviNNagar during the SravaNa Utsavam , Oh GeethA Naathan adorning the fragrant TuLasi garland on Your chest shine with BhUmi Devi as the greatest of treasures and as the blissful jyOthi . Comments : 1) The Raaga Mudhrai is in the second line of the charaNam . The Lord of ThiruviNNagar is addressed here as the divine Lord ( Dhivya Sucharitan) celebrated for His auspicious charitram( legend/history) as DasAvatAran , Bhakta rakshan and dhushta nigrahan. Sucharitran stands for Subha charitran . His subha charitram has been celebrated by the VedAs, ItihAsAs, Saatvika PurANams and the Prabhandhams of AzhwArs and stOtrams of AchAryAs . His vaibhavam as Ananta Roopan/asankhyEya vigrahan( One of infinte forms ) ,Anantha Sree: ( One of immeasurable wealth that he shares readily with the Mukta Jeevans and Nitya Sooris) , AnAdhi nidhanan ( One with no beginning or end) , AparAjitan ( One who is invincible ) and VaasudEvan is indicated by the name Sucharitran . 2 . Geethayin NaathanE : He is the One who used Arjunan as vyAjam (excuse) to bless us with the Chaarama slOkam containing the upadEsam of Prapatti to Him as the means for enjoying Moksha sukham . 3. Godhai MaNavALaa : He is the Rangamannar who arrived from Srirangam to wed Gothai at Sri VilliputthUr . 4. Keerti mEvum Thiru BhUdEvi ThiruvALaa: BhU devi and Her Kshamaa guNam has enduring fame that spreads all around. He is Sreekaran for BhUdEvi through His wedding with Her on an Iyppasi SravaNam day at ThiruviNNagar's TuLasi Vanam .Swamy Desikan celebrates the Vaibhavam of BhUmi Devi in His BhU Stuti . 5. adiyEnai adutthAtkoNDAi : The main message of the kriti is that the Sucharitran stopped the soul , which was going astray in SamsAram and showed the means for freedom from the cycles of births and deaths by pointing at His sacred feet as the soul's unfailing and ultimate refuge . 6. Aarukkum kidaikkA ariya bhAgyam : Such a rare bhAgyam of transforming from a Bhadda Jeevan to a Prapannan thru the anushtAnam of SaraNAgathy is referred to here . BahUnAm JanmanAm ante , the soul swirling in the fearsome waves of samsAric ocean is lifted out of its sufferings thru the observance of Prapatthi and becomes blessed . That is indeed a rare blessing ( ariya bhAgyam) that is not attainable by many . 7. In the charaNa Vaakyam , the festive mood prevailing during the celebration of SravaNa dheepam at ThiruviNNagar ( AakAsa Nagaram/Oppiliappan Sannidhi) is referred to ( ThiruvONat-thiruvizhAvil ThiruviNNagaril) . At that time the dhivya Sucharitan blesses the bhakthAs with the glorious BhUmi Dvi at His side and adorning the fragrant TuLasi maalai around His chest . He gives us His darsaNam as Svayam JyOthi ,Param JyOthi and as "Aanandha JyOthi " ( AanandhO BrahmEti vyajn~At, Vijn~Anam Aanandham BrahmA).He is the light of lights ( " JyOtishAm JyOti: "). 8. Arum Perum Nidhi: He is the greatest of all treasures ( Parama PurushArtham). He is BhUman ( infinite wealth and bliss) . Concluding Remarks : In this kriti in the mELa Raagam of Sucharitra , the composer visualizes ThiruviNNagrappan as GeethAchAryan as He shows His sacred feet to illustrate the charama slOka Vaakyam : " MaamEkam SaraNam Vraja". ANdal is an incarnation of BhUmi DEvi and hence the Lord is saluted as Gothai MaNavALan . The key message is that the Lord out of His dayaa guNam related to the suffering soul and gave His hand and lifted the soul out of its samsAric miseries .His Achyuta tattvam is celebrated here .
