So far we have seen 6 naamaas of the 108 – viz. 1. Sree seethaa manOharaaya nama: 2. SrI Srungaara Sekharaaya nama: 3. vaathaasanaari vara vaahanaaya nama: 66. vinatAsuta vaahanAya nama: [Jayanthasenaa] 4. vaarijaasanaadhi vandhita paadhaaya nama: 103. Sanakaadhi yOgi brundha vandhya paadhAya nama:' Now let us take up the next naama "neeraja nayanaaya nama:" in raagam 'hindhOLa vasantham'. Since all the following naamaas are also mean the same "lotus eyed raama" we can take up all at a time. 49. raajeeva akshaaya nama: KaambhOji 68. saraseeruha nayanaaya nama: (MukhAri) 94. naLina dhaLa nayanaaya nama: (Kaapi) 96. neeraja dhaLa nayanaaya nama: (Bilahari) Lotus has many Sanskrit words. The 'amara kOsam' – the Sanskrit thesaurus says following names as meaning lotus – [for both white lotus red lotus etc] 1. Padhmam 2. Nalinam 3. Aravindham 4. Mahaa uthpalam or mahOthpalam 5. Sahasra pathram 6. Satha pathram 7. kamalam 8. KusEsayam 9. PankEruham 10. Thaamarasm 11. Saarasam 12. Saraseeruham 13. Bisaprasunam 14. Raajeevam 15. Pushkaram 16. AmbOruham 17. PuNdareekam 18. SithaambhOjam 19. Raktha sarOruham 20. Raktha uthpalam or rakthOthpalam 21. KOkanadham Perhaps you may not find here the name 'vaarijaa' here, which we have seen already. Since vaari means water and vaarijaa means born from water – as lotus is born from water - it is a kaaraNap peyar as they say in tamil grammar – so since not a direct one you may not have it here. Now going into the points on these naamaas - "neeraja nayanaaya nama:" and others as above - on the eyes of lord the sree vishNu sahasra naamam has many naamaas. They are [please note the number is as per bhattar bhaashyam – for one who is following sankara bhaashyam the naama number may vary] 1. Om pushkara akshaaya nama: -- naamaa no.40 occurring in slokam 5. Also naamaa no. 561 occurring in slokam 59 meaning: for 40 - the lotus eyed lord. For 561 - he whose eyes are nourishing his seekers. 2. Om lOhitha akshaaya nama: -- naamaa no. 59 occurring in slokam 7 meaning: the red eyed lord. 3. Om puNdareeka akshaaya nama: -- naamaa no.112 occurring in slokam 12 meaning: the lotus eyed - the eyes of the inhabitants of srivaikuntham [meaning the central figure or head of sri vaikuntham] 4. Om sahasra akshaaya nama: -- naamaa no. 228 occurring in slokam 26 meaning: the 1000 eyed lord - [also in purusha sooktham] 5. Om aravindha akshaaya nama: -- naamaa no.348 occurring in slokam 38 Meaning: one who has eyes as beautiful as lotus. 6. Om mahaa akshaaya nama: -- naamaa no. 355 occurring in slokam 38 meaning: he who has the great garuda as his vehicle or mode of transport. Sree paraasara bhattar gives this meaning. But a very simple translation will mean one who has big eyes. Remember neeNda ap periyavaaya kaNgaL ennaip pEdhamai seidhanavE in amalanaadhippiraan. 7. Om vrushaBha akshaaya nama: -- naamaa no. 594 occurring in slokam 63 meaning: one who has dharma as his eyes or the eyes themselves are the dharmam. 8. Om svakshaaya nama: -- naamaa no.615 occurring in slokam 66 meaning: he who has beautiful charming divine eyes [sOBhanE puNdareekaakhE akshiNee asya ithi svaksha:] 9. Om sarvathas chakshushE nama: -- naamaa no. 631 occurrin in slOkam 67 meaning: one who has eyes every where. Perceptible to eyes of all, at all places and times. 10. Om su lOchanaaya nama: -- naamaa no. 800 occurring in slokam 85 Meaning: he whose eyes are charming and bewitching. 11. Om ravi lOchanaaya nama: -- naamaa no.888 occurring in slokam 94 Meaning: one whose eyes are the sun. We will continue in next post.
