Guest guest
SrI: Dear SrI Narasimhan: You have asked about the significance of abhivAdhanam posture . AbhivAdhanam is performed by an abhivandhakan as respectful salutation to a revered elder/AchAryan/ SrOotriyan (Veda-Saastra Vithpannan) . The gesture involves placement over the ears , where some of the key brain organs are ( amygdala , hippocampus on the left side that controls emotions , speech and memory) and recite with single minded reverence the AbhivAdhanam . The right side contains Motor brain & 3D-Processing features. One does not want to be distracted by external sound and chatter while performing AbhivAdhanam to a respectful elder . Over the right ear , the sacred GangA river is said to reside . That is why we touch the right ear with our fingers at the end of PrANAyAmam . That touch cleanses one of asuddhis . In the context of AbhivAdhanam , one can visualize taking Ganga theertam with both palms and offering argyam , Paadhyam and Aachamaneeyam waters for the worshipful visitor . We do this upachAram of Argyam, Paadhyam and Achamaneeyam to PerumAL during thirvArAdhanam . A Similar situation of reverential introduction of oneself to a respectful elder can be invoked here . There are also subtelities of introducing one's gOtram , Sutram , Veda Saakhai and one's own nAmam during the abhivAdhanam to provide context . For instance , if one is a BrahmachAri , the elder can pick up on the sagOtram ( same gotram) aspects for potential marriage prospects with a bride from gotram other than that of the person performing abhivAdhanam . The elder person recieves the abhivAdhanam and blesses the younger one with wishes for long life ( Oh Narasimha Sarman ! dheergAyushmAn bhava ). I have copied Sriman Vaasu VaadhyAr of the Vaideekam group to provide additional insights . But I wish to share the following : 1. Once NArada muni was telling the greatness of Sriman NArAyana to Him (NArAyana). Sriman NArAyana is asking, " Is it true? am I having this much greatness?, I could not believe it. " 2. Once NammazhvAr wondered about Periya Vaachan pillai's vyakhyAnam for his TiruvAimozhi, and thought " I really did not have this much idea in my mind, when I composing this PAsurams?!! " I don't know who introduced this posture for abhivadhi, but I hope he may wonder about the vyAkhyanam given by Dr.Sadagopan. What I heard about abhivAdhi is: " Bending towards the elder shows the respectfulness " The content of the abhivAdhi is a type of 'self glory', and the person should have a great respect about his ancestors and hence it should not often heard by the person himself and should not get self proudness. To keep this in mind, he should close both of his ears by both of his hands. nvs
Guest guest
Respectful SwAmin, It is a beautiful explanation of AbhivAdanam. At the end of uttering the introduction of one's gotram etc. the younger person is supposed to touch the feet of the elder to whom the abhivadanam is presented. He does so by touching the right foot by his right hand and the left foot by his left hand. He does this by keeping his hands in cross position, so that at the same time he can touch both the feet. This action completes the respect shown by the younger who seeks the blessings of the elder to whom he does the abhivAdanam.
